I do both
When I can, I try to get two of each thing... so I have them in and out. Got over 500 out of package toys and over 300 in package...
Usually I use them for display. I use to play with the toys... though once ya get older people find it odd and no one will play toys with ya anymore.

Free them from their plastic prisons!!! Unless you are a "collector" that intends to sell things.

I don't think collectors only keep things in package to sell in the future, like I don't plan to sell the ones I have. I rotate them them as displays for my room and hall way. They may be staying in the plastic... though the real question is, are they in a prision when all they're used for out of package as well is display?
It all depends on the collector.

Most of the time, I find it's harder to appreciate something if you leave it packaged (this is especially true of another collection I have). Once again, the 'to open or not to open' question comes down to what you want. Leaving them in package will increase their potential resale value, but, once again, most of the toys are mass marketed on such a large scale that you're not going to be retiring off of reselling them. Opening them makes them more easily enjoyed - but creates the hassle of having more to clean/dust.

I have to agree with Sticky on this one, all my TMNT toys I got when I was a kid. I opened most of them, but still have them around. I was never too big on keeping things in packages.

Lose the packaging. I agree: free them from their plastic prisons!

I usually keep everything in their packaging. They make great display items to show my fan girlness. In all honesty, I grew up with parents who preached about keeping toys in their boxes and on display. Heck, most of my Barbies are still in their original boxes! So yeah, thanks to that, I keep everything in their prison...times, it's easier to keep their weapons and pieces together when it comes time to put them away when my niece and nephews come to visit.

This subject always brings me back to the days of when I would shop at Kay-B-Toys to find Star Wars action figures. The year was 1983 and I had just got through seeing Return of the Jedi in the theater. I found a great Han Solo action figure from Kenner, the company that made really GOOD figures! The packaging was awesome; on the side it had this vivid photo of Harrison Ford trampling through the forest scenery of Endor. Naturally, to play with it, I tore open the packaging and damaged that gorgeous photo. I was five, what did I know? So, nowadays, if I want to keep the toys as a collection, I leave them in the box. Often times I get the boxes autographed. I've had Michael Dooney, Kevin Eastman, Sam Regal, Mike S. and Wayne Grayson sign TMNT toy boxes for me. Wayne even made a mistake on one Mikey toy box, calling himself Joey from "Yu-Gi-Oh!" I took it back to him and he asked if he could change it! Laughing, I handed him the box and he fixed it.

Aww...you let him change it! It would have been a good piece to laugh over had you kept it like that.
