Hey everyone,

These are two drawings I did back in 1993 that I really love.  I drew them with looking at TMNT 3 trading cards.  I'm really surprised I did these, since I was in a depression during the time these were done.  Hope you guys like them!

It was a hard year, for me... the depression was kind of me falling out of TMNT... August 1993 to August 1994 I wasn't as big of a TMNT fan as I have been all the other years.

Now that Leo is Krang, we have to think of what will happen next.  

Interesting you should say that, that is a time when I kind of ran dry creative-wise, as well. Yet managed to turn out some workable stuff.

It was just hard cause that August was when I was ordered to stop doing the Turtle parties, which was one of the few things that I truly enjoyed.   I went to rip all of the Turtle posters off of my walls, cause of how much this hurt me, but my sister reminded me that it wasn't the TMNT that caused us to loose this, just some guy who wasn't even a part of Mirage.  So I left the stuff up, but it still hurt me to see the stuff since inside I felt like a part of me was killed.   It was finding the Words and Pictures Museum in 94 and seeing Kevin Eastman that pulled me out of that depression.  Though I guess the full story of this, belongs more in the memory area.

Was there something that caused your dry time?  Or just not feeling it that year?

Egadz. Dreadful. You know, Mirage was having trouble at that time, if I recall correctly. They just about folded up, then. Seemed that way. Though I think that was more toward 94 through 96.
Oh, I had a lot going on, then. Just too much crud to wade through. Family stuff.
I had some good creative times, though. Sometimes I think stress is what motivates me at times.

Yeah, things were doing well in August 93 when I was there, stuff was still coming out for the release of TMNT 3 on VHS... though when Cheryl passed away is when things did get tough there, the next time I went there was in 96, and it looked like it was going through more of a rough time.  Though they're doing better right now

Yeah, sad, that. What happened to Cheryl. I didn't know her, just heard about it. Then there was the great flood inside the building that ruined a lot of work, I think that was around then, too, wasn't it?
Anyway, things have improved for them it seems, and I think a lot of it had to to with the internet community. That and just sticking it out, through thick and thin times.

The Flood was more in 91/92 by time I got to Mirage they were in the building they're still in to this day.  I remember hearing about the flood in 93 from some lady at the Laundry mat and how much stuff was just thrown away... good stuff, like the TMNT towels.  She said she got like ten of them from the trash.

Geez! Prime dumpster diving, there. In fact, if enough people knew about it... it would look like Walmart on Xmas eve. People fighting over stuff...

Hehehe  yeah, that was some treasures to find.  Not sure how many people did know about it.   Too bad it happened though.  The studio that flooded was the one I thought I would see when I went... cause I'll always remember one interview with Eastman & Laird done in 1990 in the studio... and there was this big room where the artist were all at.  Though the new studio didn't have that room... I was shocked, cause I did look for it.  Though than I learned of the flood.

Though I hear it's not that uncommon to come out of getting a BS in art for an artist to stop drawing for a good year or so...at least, I can count about two or three that I know that have openly stated so.

........*pulls deskitsu*  I could also blame pregnancy.



Sadly? The things I *do* draw end up looking really good.  It's.....weird.

Of course, klork, you're allowed!  
It's even worse to have a dry spell when you're supposed to be completing a commissioned piece.... *guilt, guilt*
Which is why I have trouble doing those. But it's also nice to earn something with the art.
Working at the professional level kind of burned me out, though.  
Which is why I'm just sticking with the occasional fine art sort of stuff, and illustrating my own books. Which is taking forever, at this point.
I did manage to write and draw a comic, which was uh, 25-30 pages long, more or less, while my son was under a year old. And I went without sleep as a result.
One has to trade one thing for another.
You either pursue a career and a) neglect your family and/or b) neglect youself, which can lead to health problems.
I'm at this point trying to get myself back on track and my kids to stay the course, so the art is the casualty at this point.

Yep, yep... the churning out the rare art piece that turns out well, at least for me, is more a happy accident than anything.

I haven't posted anything to Devart in ages... *more guilting*

And I too, understand! I have had to mostly give up creative art and drawing due to work, horse, sword training, etc. (Work would be the numer one reason though.) My job is near zero on doing creative graphics, but at least it pays me enough to live rather well. So I agree about the tradeoffs.

After talking about all this, I went back to working on the commissioned piece, and now I'm backinto it again. A positive thing happened from this conversation!
