Peter Laird wants to rewrite history to make it "Michelangelo" (as the painter) but it's been "Michaelangelo" for ages. What say you?

I'll never fully agree to this, because I like the original spelling more.  Which is why my nick has the a.  Though I will respect his wishes with the new stuff.  So when I'm talking about the new cartoon and comics I spell it Michelangelo, though when I'm talking about the original stuff and in my fanfics and RPs I will keep it Michaelangelo.

I feel Michaelangelo's personalitiy doesn't match Michelangelo's, so why should his name have too?

Hey, Raphael's personality doesn't match Raphael the painter's either, but those names match.  Wink

As for rewriting history...not a huge fan of it.  Mikey's name was spelled wrong with the "a" right from the start. Oops. Oh well, deal with it.  It's not a huge catastrophe to have it misspelled. But, what can ya do? That's what Peter wants, and the turtles ARE his, so...

Of course, there could always be a story done on how Mike decides to change his name to match the painter's name and the troubles he runs into, trying to get others to use the new spelling (or even trying to get it legally changed *G*).

Well I as for me, I am so used to his 'Michelangelo' spelling and I don't really know why, that's just how they have been spelling it on the new show, I don't mind it, Peter can change the name if he wants to but it's Mikey, I mean, I use his short form name more than either of the spellings. Wink

They might've misspelled it to begin with, but for me, it'll always be Michaelangelo. That's how it was to begin with, they should just leave it alone.

But it's Peter's toy to play with, so it's his decision. *shrugs* Michelangelo may be the proper spelling of the painter, but, I dunno, I think the misspelling is rather charming. More unique to Mikey's wild and playful personality. Happy/Smile

You know, I do believe there was an episode or 2 of the original cartoon where they spelled his name out "Michelangelo" in the title. Honestly, I think both spellings are exceptional, but I agree with Ivey on how they could be used. The old mis-spelling can always be synonymous with the franchise pre-2001.

Well hasn't it been admitted that they know that Leo's katanas aren't katanas but they aren't changing them?  So why change the spelling of Mikey's name?

It took me a long time but I did eventually get used to typing Michelangelo.  No one ever gave me crap about "spelling it wrong" though which is nice, but I felt that if that's how they wanted it spelled then alright, whatever they say.

I personally think it should be Michelangelo especially since if they are named after the Renaissance artists.
Then again Michelangelo (the artist) is pronounced Mick-el-angelo. But saying Michael-angelo (the TMNT) is the more accepted pronunciation. So, I guess I think that it should be spelled Michelangelo, but pronouced Michaelangelo.

It just goes to show how loopy the English language is. I still use honour, favourite, colour, and grey which is due to my Canadian upbringing. So spelling doesn't really matter. Let's just go with the wisdom of Homer Simpson:

Quote from: "Homer Simpson"
Blue M&M... red M&M... they all come out the same colour in the end...

I think some random issues by random artists have drawn the katanas right, but for the most part they're drawn as straight Japanese swords of equal length... these are actually called "ninjato" swords. And even if they were both katanas (which have a distinctive curve), no one has ever dual-wielded two katanas... usually swordsmen that want to wield two swords will wield "daisho," a katana and a wakizashi (slightly shorter than katana) sword.

But for most purposes we still refer to both of Leonardo's swords as katanas, even if they aren't. Not really a huge deal.

I'm cool with either or spelling really, though i have gotten use to typing it out the new way Michelangelo, but eh, still the same turtle, still the same name. It's just spelled a little different, no big deal to me.

Besides it does make a nice reference for when people are refering to new mikey turtle stuff in reference to the old. Just be glad they didn't do the change to all the turtles names regardless of the reason they changed Mikey's.

I'm still partial to Michaelangelo too, cause that was my little way to tell the Turlte apart from the painter.  So if I would be driving around town, and see an Italian/pizza restaurant named "Michaelangelo", I would wonder if that was really named after the Turtle too.  :p

Yeah I liked knowing it different from the artist as well... like doing online searches... it's funny how many things for the artist still come up when you're searching with Michaelangelo.

Though the new spelling does bring it closer to spelling my real name Wink
