He's hatching TODAY!!! It was funny...we came in after dropping kiddo at grammas to spend the w/e with her and my mom, and I'm looking at the eggs going "I hope you guys hatch." I was getting discouraged. It took me a few seconds to register that there was a head sticking out of one of the eggs!!! So friends, I give you... Leonardo. For those who don't know, I breed an exotic species of turtle, Central American Ornate Wood turtles...gorgeous species with tons of personality and pretty smart. The father is Donatello; named because wood turtles are known to be the smartest of all the species...it was a given! And the mother is Jessie, who was named for Jessie in Toy Story- she'sa wood toy, Jessie's a wood turtle...okay it's weird, my hubby named her! Back in November 1st, my first began to hatch, Steve. Named after Steve Irwin, my tribute to one of my heros. Now this guy, is Leo cause I simply don't have a Leo yet. There are 2 more eggs, one should be VERY soon because it was from the same clutch at Leo. And then next month another baby. THEN I got a crapload more eggs in diapause(cooling period)...

Then I guess Leo will become Leona. Hehe... Awesome pic of the baby turtle! He does look like a Leo. Can you tell the sex from the shape of the face with wood turtles? Slider females have shorter nosed, broader faces, and the males have longer noses, and narrower faces.

Actually, as hatchlings you really can't'tell the sex. About a year old you may be able to tell. My 4 RES were about 1 year old when the boys began to grow out their tails and the claws grew out a few months later. But yes, as adults, female RES have HUGE broad heads and wide bodies for carrying all those eggs. Boys are smaller and narrower. I'm calling the turtles boys because of their incubation temps being on the low, boy producting side BUT...there's always the chance they're girls. Here he is! Leonardo: pipped 1-5-07, out of the egg 1-6-07...this kid ain't foolin around. I removed the top of the egg where it's just an empty space but it seemed to get him in gear, he did the rest of the work getting out. That was a FAST hatching. I think he's already living up to his namesake being a strong little squirt. He hung onto my hand tightly! Yes, turtles DO have a belly button but it dissapears as the plastron seams seal up and the yolk is all absorbed. He won't eat for a week living on the last of the yolk's nutrients. His man concern now is survival and of course he has nothing to fear being born in captivity. No predators here!

I see! That's very kewl to learn that. Gadz, there's nothing like seeing newly hatched turtles. They look like little plastic toys, all shiny, and perfect miniatures of adults...
