So far for us, we have issues 1, 2, 4 and 5. (Raph, Mikey, April and Leo.)
#3 (Don) didn't ship yet and the movie version itself has not yet shipped.
When we get them, just tack the comments onto this thread.

If you don't want spoilers, then don't read any further!

I think the biggest surprise for me on these is movie 4 was supposedly picking up from the chronology of the other movies, but then there's a twist I'm still wrapping my mind around.
Based on Splinter's trophy room, with the time sceptre and the samurai armor suits (which they didn't actually come back wearing in the 3rd movie so how did they get those?), that implies movie 3 counts in additon to the first movie. I'm guessing movie 2 still counts?? I know there's been interviews with Kevin Munroe and such that discuss how the second and third movies do or don't count in the chronology for 4...guess I'd have to go back and study that stuff again?
But then the prequel comics as a whole present things that came from the Mirage and the new 4Kids cartoon series.
In addition to Karai in the new movie, there's fights with Triceratons in the comics, the Utroms are mentioned, and Leo knows about the Ancient One. So it's placing that stuff in with the movie chronology that's what I'm working through.

So during the time after the movies, they get involved in these other things like the Triceratons. And something with the Utroms that isn't shown in the comics.
Splinter had them cut off from being involved in "the world of men". So they were strictly dealing with alien presences, not anything like Foot ninja, either. Does this support that Leo (and the others) do not know who Karai is until they see her working with the Foot in the 4th movie? (As mentioned in my movie review comments, I'm not clear on the movie whether Leo did or did not know who Karai was when she attacked him. Due to dialogue changes from the novel, where the novel clearly states Leo doesn't know who she is. But the novel should be discussed in a separate thread. Razz )

There's certainly some character adjustments from where the movies left off, in what I would say are more maturing kinds of changes. Leo was clearly taking on more of a leadership role than seen in the 3 movies.
Don and Mikey started thinking about jobs leading to earning money. (Which I really like as an idea in general that makes sense!) Naturally Mikey's job involves kids, I'll be looking forward to seeing the Don issue when it comes out, hopefully has something about his starting on the tech support stuff.
Although in the Mikey issue when Mike ends up out on the hockey ice rink--"ice ice baby"  Shocked  Aaaaah! Of course, then he says he hates that song.  Cool
But Mikey still wants to be a hero, despite Splinter's orders. For the "greater good". And starts on his Nightwatcher fan kick, which I think was a good bit of fun in the movie, too. It's like he's living out his desire he's denied having through his fandom--which is an interesting turn on the RL fandom, eh?
And it was great to see a Mikey and Don team up for the Cowabunga Carl gig, that doesn't get shown in the movie, although we had seen something of Don working with Mikey in the early movie clips at SanDCon last year. (Hope it's on the dvd!) Obviously Splinter appreciates the cake.
Raph gets upset about criminals preying on people, and being denied helping them. And probably the extra push from being jealous about Leo being sent out for the training, on top of once he meets up with David it's the phone call to see Leo off that messes up Raph from having any chance of saving David from the gunmen. Not that that last part is actually stated in the comic, buuut....
April has quite the adventure getting that 4th general statue! And it set up her transition from I guess, the tv news reporter of the early movies to antique shop seller then using her aquired martial arts skills, too? I'm guessing she set up a new store after the original burned down in the first movie? I noticed the set up on the store in the comic seemed more similar to the new cartoon than the first movie, although the comic seems to imply her and Casey's apartment is a separate location from the store, not just above it like the cartoon. Hm, have to study that apartment thing in the movie too, sometime, just for fun.
When Leo faces the Ancient One, with a reference to the Ninja Tribunal there, I do have the impression this is his first encounter with him. Based on the way the comments are said, it doesn't seem Leo was familiar with the Ancient One's commentary style of "kumquats".
I did like the way the Leo issue ended, the discussion about community and family was very nice. Not a pie in the sky view about world peace/community, but a realistic one about how many people do treat each other. But instead of giving up hope, focusing on the personal and going outward from there.

Lots of fun things to think about, it certainly deepens the character arcs for the movie versions.
I'm glad Mirage did the prequel comics.

I'm kind of annoyed that they started incorporating stuff from the 4Kids series. I mean honestly, it's not very fair considering how back in the day they were never allowed to incorporate anything from Archie or the original toon!

I don't think "fair" or "not fair" has much to do with it. It's Peter's show now what areas he'd let  Kevin M. use for the movie, or what Peter chose to put into the prequel comics. Things aren't the same as they were when the first batch of movies came out....
I'm neither annoyed nor overjoyed about it, I'm still wrapping my mind about it.

Considering the current Mirage comic story line incorporated the Battle Nexus where Leo went? <shrug>

Reflecting on Karai's parting comment about familiar faces, it does make me wonder if they'd go with the Shredder as an Utrom concept, or maybe something to do with the Ninja Tribunal. (Which I still have not seen any of those "lost" NT episodes so I don't know how that story really went.)
Based on the fact no one's really started working on a movie sequel story because there's still no official word there will be one, I'd guess anything goes at this point.

Additionaly, based on the movie chronology, there's still a lot of difference to both the Mirage series and the new cartoon.
Raph was the one the Foot beat up on the rooftops, then he goes through the skylight crashing into April's place.
Tatsu was involved in the fight once they got down into the store.
Casey battled Tatsu again during Splinter's rescue, and defeated him.
The fight with all the Turtles and Shredder didn't happen until the end, and even though Leo cut him once during the fight, the Shredder had Leo pinned. Splinter saved Leo, and indirectly through Shredder's rage was responsible for Shredder's fall.
If you look at the second movie fight with Shredder? He...kinda wiped himself out, actually. Rolling Eyes
So you don't have the Leo v Shredder rivalry that was in the Mirage comics, nor even the version we got in the new cartoon. We never had seen any Shredder Elite in the movies that would seek revenge. And we don't see Tatsu, but Karai in charge. But then there's no past history with Karai prior to the 4th movie, from what we know, either. Hmm...things to amuse one's creative mind with over a cup of tea, I think.

Update for Movie Prequel Comic #3, Donatello.
SPOILERS!!!!

Ye've been warned, aye, that ye have!

Razz  Razz  Razz

Why is Don so late?
 LOL  LOL  LOL
Anyway, my comic shop owner was puzzled and concerned that I already had this issue. I had to reassure him that, no, all is well, I needed the Donnie. This isn't the first time in history that Mirage shipped issues out of order....so I guess it's like a little bit of the olde days.
Razz
So I get home and it's like looking at the regular series when you see the first page. And yet, a little different. Because they did adjust for the difference of the movie characters, and there's a rather large team of inkers. Splinter's got his extra long beard. Don's more rounded than 'normal current Mirage' style. Sometimes he's a little more gangly like the movies.

I have to say the first page cracks me up. Don isn't  shown, and yet....  LOL
We get another of Don's inventions, which happens to be useful as a way of introing Don finding out about the monsters. But the bit with Raph sleeping in his room as a surprise is funny. Then gone later and Splinter checking his room?  Razz
But of course, an underlying theme is there that Don's invention is so they can always find each other. That leads into the movie themes nicely.
I liked seeing Splinter in mini-team ups with Don and then Mikey.
And then they get to rescue Don but he's trying to carry on a conversation with the bat. That suits Don! He's not about to be eaten or tied up or anything.  Very Happy/Big Grin
So sad for Donnie when his invention burns up, but then, kinda expected that...would have made it a little too easy for them later.  Wink
______________
The Movie Comic

Okaaaaay.
Gomen nasai.
(I am apologizing now for what I am about to write. I debated just not writing anything because what I have to say is not focused on finding the qualities in something. I usually try to respect the fact that artists have styles, even if their's isn't one I find appealing.)

The art...I...I...
Words fail me.
I had been expecting a gem. Mirage doing a comic of the movie, this should be their best stuff, right?
 Shocked
Why does Mikey in particular look like a Duck character? Talk about a beak!!
As with the novel, it's clear they weren't working with final designs on this. On one hand, seeing a different take of the scene from the movie can be cool, but not when it's something like a simple clear cylinder as opposed to the monster containment cells seen in the movie.
I know time and effort went into this, and maybe they had to rework it along the way if something major in the movie changed? But the figures are inconsistent, often simplistic. There's some spots that are nicely laid out from a graphics standpoint, or inked nicely (even if the level of detailing is very low throughout and very stylized). Or something that does look really good here and there.
But some panel cuts are so abrupt, or the panels vague in what they show, so if you hadn't seen the movie, it wouldn't make sense. Some of the movie dialogue that is missing would have helped, but then, it's supposed to be a comic, not a novel. So the art and layout should be clearly telling the story, too.
And: "Chef Boyardeee" scares meeee.

I'm sorry...I can't help it. I want to quote Don from the end of the Don issue.
"I think I'm going to cry."
The comic should have been as good as the movie in its own way, because TMNT came from the comics....
Again, my apologies for not saying nice things.

Editing my reply,I'll get back to this when I have actually taken the time to look closer at the book... I will say, these guys remind me of Disney. Wondering if they worked with them, or if the style influenced them.

Just to put my two cents worth in, Leonardo-san.

I'm forgiving of the set of prequels artwise speaking.  If only because I find the official movie comic a.....I want to cuss, but I won't.....ummm, vast disappointment. Mad

And I'll just leave it at that.
