Sault Ste. Marie
*Photo on their site*
ON JANUARY 23RD… we left a message for Tammy and Brenda at the Country Way health food store in Sault Ste. Marie. In response, we got an email:

Sorry I missed your phone call today, my partner Tammy and I are very excited about participating…. I look forward to discussing this further with you tomorrow. I will give you a call tomorrow morning.

Thank You, Brenda

The next day it was pouring January rains back home in Vancouver, and the phone rang at about 8:00am. It was Tammy, and she was excited like Matt gets excited! That’s two very excited people speaking about an event for a tour which wouldn’t make it to the Sault for another 6 months. The seed was sown for a great event…

FAST FORWARD THROUGH THE NEXT 5 ¾ MONTHS… complete with 80 hour training and planning weeks for Steph and Matt, and not much contact with the Country Way other than this initial call. The tour was just 10 days away from the Sault, and our amazing Events Director, Michelin brought it up that the tour had a stop in Sault Ste Marie but no event! And so, in the middle of nowhere Ontario, with intermittent cell service, we made the call in earnest to see about an event with the awesome folks at the Country Way in The Sault!

Both Tammy and Brenda were on it now and their combined excitement to put it together in less than 10 days (more like 7), gave us the extra energy to run our butts off to make it there for the 16th of July! Little did we know, this was the start of a five-start community event…. HERE’S HOW IT WENT…

HOTEL: Wee were treated like celebrities with a 2 night stay at the Water Tower Algoma Hotel

RUN: Event day started with a 5km run with the local running group, the Sault Stryders, led by world champion tri-athlete, Sherri Smith, along with police escort by bike – everyone wearing R41P shirts and hats!

MEDIA: Ran around the Sault, straight to the Country Way where we were met by two local papers – the SooToday.com and the Sault Star. Radio personality, “Junior” and his colleague “Rocky”, from YES-FM were also on location all day

GITS: Showered with gifts from the many vendors on-site – so much so, we’ll have some of it for the whole journey back to Vancouver!

GOV’T: Met by two city counselors, both very engaged with environmental stewardship in the Sault

FOOD: Vegetarian BBQ with all proceeds going to R41P

FUNDRAISING: Day wrapped up with a huge lotto-sized cheque presented by Tammy and Brenda!

We were made to feel like old friends in a city we knew for just 48 hours. It is truly this Canadian spirit which moves us forward everyday on our journey around the continent. Steph, Vanessa and I want to say a heartfelt “thank you” Tammy and Brenda at the Country Way, for believing and sharing in our dream.

THANK YOU for throwing such an amazing sidewalk BBQ to allow us to get to know you both, your wonderful staff and experience a bit of the magic of a place called: The Soo!

August 14 is Blackout Day and the Run for One Planet will “have fun with the lights off!” in the City of Woodstock

*Photo on blog*
Blackout Day recognizes a massive Blackout that occurred on August 14, 2003. It was the largest blackout in North-American history, and affected significant portions of the Northeastern United States and most of Ontario for up to 3 days in some areas.

In 2005, the Woodstock Environment Advisory Committee (WEAC) proposed a Voluntary Blackout Day Challenge for Ontario Municipalities to acknowledge the 2003 massive Blackout . With support from Woodstock Hydro and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), this grassroots event evolved from humble beginnings as a local Woodstock event in 2005, to a Province-wide municipal challenge in 2006.

2007 saw the challenge extended out to all business owners in Ontario as the event was held on a weekday for the first time. Blackout Day is intended to communicate the need for energy conservation and demand management to the public.

Beyond saving energy on just one day, the City of Woodstock, now in partnership with The Blackout Day Group, is striving to raise awareness of the need to conserve electricity throughout the year. Our power system is essential to every aspect of our modern lives, yet it is fragile and must not be taken for granted.

Check out www.blackoutday.ca to take the Blackout Day Challenge!

What is one tonne of carbon dioxide
by Chris Tilley
*photo on website*
I was recently asked what one tonne of carbon dioxide was equivalent too. My first though was how many trees. One mature tree absorbs 48 lbs of carbon dioxide per year. It stores the carbon and releases the oxygen that we all breathe.(source) A tree does this through photosynthesis basically sun, carbon dioxide and water go in and produces water, oxygen and sugar. The sugar contains the carbon and is what the tree uses to grow. (source) Using the 48 lbs per tree we would need 46 trees to offset one tonne of carbon.

Going back to the plastic bags article one persons yearly plastic bags causes 30.5 lbs of carbon dioxide. That would take one tree almost 8 months to absorb. For the 1,000,000 people it would take 636,226 trees a year to absorb.

Another way to look at carbon is offsetting. The basic premise is to make the changes you can to reduce you carbon footprint and buy credits in companies that spend the money doing something that either reduces carbon dioxide emissions or absorbs them. There are a number of companies out there that sell carbon credits. A quick search found prices per tonne of carbon dioxide at anything between $12 and $110 per tonne. (source 1, source 2) These sites always have a list of the projects that they are investing in. They also will tell you what standards they adhere to how they are certified and verified.

Who do you think is the greenest person you know?
*Picture on blog*
Run For One Planet was nominated by Brent Caughy for CBC'S "Who do you think is the greenest person you know?" contest!

Check it out (scroll down about half way down the page): http://www.cbc.ca/bc/news/yourstory/features/q-080515-greenest.html.

READ WHAT BRENT SUBMITTED:

I work in RV service. Motor homes don't exactly make one think of green contributions but I recently met Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait (who are getting press these days) when they purchased a diesel motor home from our RV dealership to take in their environmental run around North America.

I dealt with them when the shop I look after installed a complete solar charging system for them.

I was very impressed at the approach they are taking, from bio-diesel to a completely green approach to their fundraiser. I have learned a great deal from these two people and not only was inspired by their efforts but they made me feel good about my own job which didn't have much green content on a daily basis.

THANK YOU SO MUCH BRENT! THAT WAS SO THOUGHTFUL OF YOU!

Idling

    2. Turn Off Your Car

The next time you find yourself idling your car for any longer than 2 minutes, in a long traffic jam, construction site, border line up, or just waiting for someone, cut your engine! While you’re at it, try using your car one less day per week too. With a little planning, we can all use our cars less and save both money and carbon emissions. You will save costs not only in fuel, but also in fewer trips to the gas station. And as the price of fuel rises, you’ll benefit right away!

The average Canadian idles their car for between 5 and 10 minutes a day.(source) I decide to watch the other morning as people waited in the drive thru line up. As I walked in I timed the last car in line. It took that car 6 minutes of idling to get through the line (I had to wait to finish my timing). From the same website it takes approximately 0.2 litres (.05 gallons) of gas for every 10 minutes of idling. The approximately is because it will differ depending on your engine. So over a year not idling your car will save you 73 litres or 19.28 gallons of gas. That works out to between $70 and $110 and rising depending on what you are paying for gas right now. On the carbon dioxide front each gallon of gas your car uses equals 20 lbs of carbon dioxide(source). So by not idling your car 10 minutes a day means a pound of CO2 saved. Over a year that eliminating that idling would save 385 lbs. One million people taking action and avoiding idling 10 minutes a day will result in saving 73 million litres or 19.28 million gallons of gas. That equates to saving almost 175,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

10 minutes less idling per day for a year saves

1 Action

    * 385 Lbs of carbon dioxide which takes 8 trees one year to absorb.
    * $70 - $110
    * 19.28 gallons 73 litres

1 Million Actions

    * 175,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide which takes 8 million trees a year to absorb
    * 19.28 million gallons 73 million litres

Do you feel sexy?
*photo in blog*

Because we don’t feel sexy. But we got whistled at today on the side of the TransCanada, heading into Orillia, and immediately turned to each other and asked… “who was that for?”

It’s Steph and Vanessa here. We’ll tell you why we don’t feel like we deserved the cat call. We haven’t showered for 72 hours (well, ok Steph hasn’t, but Vanessa managed to dip herself into the lake yesterday. Would that be considered a shower?). So we smell, we’re hot, we’re sticky, and we have greasy hair.

Vanessa wears a really sexy yellow and orange reflector vest while riding to protect us from drivers (now that’s hot). Steph is wearing her marathon clothes for more than one day because we have no idea when we’ll get laundry facilities again.

We get smelled out of the RV because the pooper isn’t working properly. It’s a recent problem, and if we have the windows in the front of the RV open when we’re driving we can smell the pooper throughout the rest of the RV. It smells like moldy old poo and it permeates our clothing and the seats. Did we mention the Black and Grey are FULL and we don’t know where the next RV site is?

We get caught in the rain, then the sun (think Toronto summer heat & humidity), then thunder showers. We sweat, we get muddy when it rains, the sun comes out and we get sweaty again, come into the RV, cool down, then the sweat dries and we go out there and do it again so there is salty sweat upon layers of salty sweat.

Now does that sound sexy?? This is why we wanna know… who got whistled at on the side of the highway??!!

The motto is simple. The summer camp where it comes from is, in a word, Magical. Each summer, kids from all over the area, and other countries, come to experience the magic of Youth Leadership Camps Canada in Orillia, Ontario.

We were privileged to experience the magic of this camp a few days ago after meeting Philly D (camp director) running on a rainy morning just outside of Winnipeg.

The spirit of the kids, the staff and chief camper, Stu Saunders, lifted us up and left a lingering feeling of happiness we’ll take with us for the duration of our journey. You know, there’s just something pretty special about a camp that makes the theme of the week the ‘environment’, in your honor….

something pretty special about campers making up songs for earth and serenading you, singing solo and in groups….

something pretty special about swarms of campers and directors alike coming up to you with open arms and big smiles….

something pretty special about camp directors that give their campers the option of donating some of their “tuck money” to our cause rather than spending it on candy….

something pretty special about a camp that keeps the Action Challenge Sheet running throughout the camp for the week, inspiring kids to take one new action for earth…

something pretty special about sitting on the Muskoka chairs, and meeting Emily, Gabby, and Jason…

something pretty special about climbing a 50 foot pole, and declaring in front of all these special people of wanting to change the world… and leaping to swat the buoy…

something pretty special about over 100 campers running you out of the camp, cheering on either side.

(sorry our presentation went an hour overtime… we were pretty touched by something pretty special… then you had to go and give us that standing ovation…)

This time in history needs a place like YLCC to motivate, inspire and dare kids to believe in the power of their dream. Being in nature, so close to the city, is a much needed place for kids to explore their greatness. Please visit www.ylcc.com for something pretty special.

Thanks, Phil, Austin the dog, Trish, Erin, Angela, Oranj, all you amazing leaders of tomorrow and head puba camper himself, STU-pendous Saunders.

Hope to see you soon……

Nutrition Plus in Barrie, ON

Barrie Ontario brought another incredible event with the AMAZING Meredith Firth and her crew at Nutrition Plus! We were, once again, welcomed in like old friends and given support by way of a well attended and organized Action event. A group from Georgian College stopped by to share all the success they’ve had making their college more environmentally friendly. Even Barrie’s MP, Patrick Brown stooped by and offered his support. Thank you all.

Looking back on the day, Steph and I realized another big aspect of success was, a very creative way Meredith raised action and donations to our cause.

She inspired Action and raised money by:

·     having a raffle with draw prizes

·     selling many earth friendly products and donating all money to R41P

·     having a donation bin on site

Our actions for the Planet continue to amount as well. To date the tour has inspired 953 new actions for earth!

Keep sharing our tour with your family, friends and colleagues! You have the power to inspire others.

Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait

Run For One Planet

Today was a day in history for me

My morning started by running 6k

3k with Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait

3K back to camp

It was an unforgettable experience

Spine chilling

All of us at YLCC were honoured to have these two guests spend two nights with us

They participated in camp, ate meals with us, presented to us

I cannot believe what I witnessed

What I just saw

Who I just spoke to

I cannot believe they were at our camp

Here to inspire

Here to motivate

Dedicated to making a difference

So dedicated that they made me think of what I wasn’t doing

What I could be doing

What I should be doing

Why haven’t I been

So much more each of us can do

It was a dream, a thought, a what if

A conversation between two people

A dream

It started December 2006, the commitment

Commitment to reach for what others thought was unreachable

Each day they were a little bit closer

Closer to changing the world

Making our world a better place

They day it all started was May 4, 2008

A dream made into reality

It is so easy for us to accept our faults, easier to make excuses

Easy to blame others for our lack of persistence for our lack of dedication

So hard to change our ways

How do you change your mentality if you have never found the reason to

They gave us a reason

They gave us the knowledge and the desire to change

They have a desire like no other
A desire to change the planet

One step at a time

Their dream is a reality

Their living dream is to raise $1 million dollars while reaching 1 million people to inspire environmental action

One step at a time, one day at a time

One person at a time

They have each committed to running one marathon a day

That is 42km each

I marathon a day with only the required non-run days

Imagine running a marathon each day

Imagine running 42km/day

Imagine the time and energy that would take

Matt and Stephanie average a 12-14 hour running day

80% of us cannot commit to an hour at the gym

50% of us cannot get out of bed on time

They not only did this for one day, they are doing it for one year

They will total 17,700km in a year

They will do this do change the planet

Sacrificing everything they ever knew

Giving up all the conveniences that we take for granted

Renting out their homes, leaving behind their jobs

They have done all of this to make a legacy

To initiate change

I have never felt so empowered

Never felt so motivated

I was honoured to spend time with Matt and Stephanie

Ask them questions

Feel their spirit

Absorb their aurora

There isn’t anything else that they would rather be doing

They didn’t have one negative thing to say

Not one complaint

So content

So humble

If you saw them on the street, not running, you wouldn’t believe that they were doing this

You would never know

They would approach you

Get to know who you are

What you were doing, where you were going

They have a genuine care and concern for the human species

They are compassionate

With that also comes their passion for the environment

For change

For a better world

They do not preach, they do not convince

They simply tell you what they believe

What they feel

How they are motivated

And, you want to change

You want to take that extra step forward

You absorb their aurora

You want to make the world a better place

You want to help change the planet

Not only because they are doing this amazing life altering “planet changing initiative”

But because you can feel what they believe

I feel empowered

Motivated

I cannot wait to start change

They helped me put my life in perspective

If they can run 12-14 hours in one day, why can I not get up and run 5K

I know I can do it, I have, I am just too dam lazy to keep it up

Why can I not change my life

Why can I not better my life

Why can I not stick to the schedule I want to stick to

Run when I should be running

Journal when I should be journaling

Why can I not commit to more than myself

More than just my environment

Why can I not go bigger

I am learning that they small things make the biggest differences

Each step forward is still a step ahead

Each small deposit is still a gain in interest

Showering with the door open and the light off

Lighting candles at night instead of turning on my light

Reducing my water usage

Getting rid of plastic bags all together

Using my own water re-usable water bottle

Why haven’t I done this

Laziness

Pure and utter laziness

These two individuals have committed to running for a whole year – 17,700km and I cannot drag my shell out of bed on time in the morning.

I cannot carry my groceries out of the store without using the plastic they so kindly provide for me

Of all the things within my control why would I not want to change them

Why would I not better myself and the planet in which we live

Why wouldn’t you?

Do you have a reason?

I encourage you to see their video

Their reason

See their inspiration and just imagine if for one day you had to put your foot in their shoes

Their running shoes

Just imagine

If you can’t fathom running 14 hours a day, 42 km each, living and sleeping on the road for a whole year then see how you can help

www.runforoneplanet.com

See what they are doing, where they have been, where they are headed

If this does not empower you to commit to changing one thing then you will never commit to change

All you will ever commit to will be excuses

They have no return

You will never get any kind of investment out of an excuse

Excuses only hinder your forward movement

I would like to thank Matt and Stephanie

Thank you for inspiring me, motivating me and encouraging me to bring change into my life

Thank you for making the reason so easy
So simple

So powerful

I will see you at your welcome home party

You have touched our lives

And I am a better person because of it

Much love

Say hi to Vanilla
