Spoiler: Alright, I'm going to tell you all about the Archie series. They're probably as old as some of you here, so it's not like I'm letting out a big secret, but if you don't want to know the intimate details then don't read.
(This review should be linked to #1 and #2, it's a two parter)
(The version I have was actually a set that came with a cassette tape. I do not have the first printing.)
Subject : TMNT Adventures Archie Comics #1 and #2 - Return of The Shredder
Issue #1 & #2 Subtitle: The Return of the Shredder Writer: Christy Marx (also says Story by David Wise and Patti Howeth, not sure what is the difference but it might have to do with that this comic was based on a TV episode) Editor: I see no editor listed Pencil: None listed Inker:None listed Publish date:The Originals were 03/1988 and 05/1989 (that's kind of a long time to wait for the conclusion...) The one I personally own is the Third Printing, 1990.
*spoiler warnings*
These two comics closely follow the episode Return of The Shredder from the original cartoon series, in which Krang returns Shredder from Dimension X, and with out Krang's technology Shredder relies on a group of total 80's punks dressed like turtles to ruin their good name. Seeing that this, clearly, will not be enough, and with no help from Krang, or even Rocksteady or Bebop, Shredder tracks down Baxter Stockman. They manage to kidnap Splinter. Meanwhile our heroes defeat the imposters, and if they hadn't already determined that Shredder taught them their fighting technique, the sign "Meet Me At The Slash For Cash Dojo If You Dare - Shredder", was a big tip off that he is, in fact, back. A series of cliches follow ("now I can destroy all of you!" "If you Dare touch a whisker...". The Mega-ton fist of doom looks promising, but somehow Baxter randomly appears with the ultimate Ratcatcher of doom, in the ensuing chaos the turtles free Splinter and no one is crushed or diced. Shredder grabs Baxter and runs of with him (kind of weird...). the next few panals chronicle his embarrassment as he explains the whole thing to Krang, who is apparantly quite bored in Dimension X. Also, Krang has blue eyes. How did that happen? There's the classic Shredder pose, one fist raised in anger, I've seen that pose in the gameboy game when he's going to attack you. Splinter is the real winner at the end, April "winks" at him on national television.
In the days before there were DVDs available of everything, this comic was a handy way of reliving the episode. I don't recall any major differences between it and the episode. In fact, most of the dialog is exactly the same (for instance the girl whose trying to tell April about the turtles saving her and confuses them with alligators and salamanders). One difference I did notice in this issue is that Irma looks nothing like she does in the cartoon, she has short black hair. Vernon also looks different. The comic has neat little pages in which it teaches you pig latin, has a TMNT quiz, history from Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman (before Kevin left), ads for a Pizza Power Board Game I never saw, a recipe for crazy pizzas, and a weird song that goes to the tune of "on top of old smokey". Very entertaining.
So...what did you all think?
