*SPOILER* Image TMNT Volume 3, Issue #1 *SPOILER*

Reading/Studying Discuss here about the Image TMNT issue #1, released June 1996 with the team consisting of Gary Carlson, Frank Fosco, Erik Larsen, Chance Wolf, and Chris Eliopoulos.

Idea General fan consensus towards the Image run is quite negative so if you don't like this particular volume, we ask that you be polite for others who did enjoy the line. You can, however, post constructive criticism and it's definitely welcomed.

Reading/Studying Spoilers and reviews are beyond this point.

Party! The TMNT have reached eighteen years of age, and Master Splinter throws them a party and provides many words of wisdom to his young adult sons. Unfortunately, the party is cut short as a group of cybernetic killers, lead by a deadly female ninja named Pimiko, evade the lair's security threshold; the party crashers' main objective is to capture the rat and one turtle for someone named "Dragonlord".

Reading/Studying Big thanks for Dan Berger (of the former ninjaturtles.com) gathering all of the necessary information:

The TMNT are attacked in their lair by a group of cyborgs lead by a female ninja named Pimiko. Donatello was severely wounded in the initial attack, and Pimiko ends up capturing Splinter while he was trying to help his fallen son. The villains escape with Donatello and Splinter as captives. Raph, Leo and Mike chase their foes, but the villains escape in a helicopter. While the vehicle flies off, Donatello dreams of recent events and eventually awakes with a start - attacking the nearest cyborg! Both assailants crash out of the helicopter and begin freefalling to the ground far, far below.

Back at the Turtles' lair, the three remaining brothers investigate a fallen cyborg (that had its head removed in the battle). As Raph pokes the body with his sai, the head awakens and calls out a warning. Raphael ignores the warning and prods the body again, and this time it opens fire and the blast hits the curious Turtle in the face. Mike smashes the head and Leo cuts the body into pieces. Raphael's face is severely injured and Mike leads him off to get the first aid kit. Master Splinter appears in astral form and informs Leonardo of the dire circumstances facing both Donatello and himself.

Mindy's Review: Despite fan criticism of the series, I absolutely love this volume (and particular issue). The TMNT have such witty personalities and kick some major butt. The villains are very raw and real and show no mercy at all towards our heroes. The art took a bit for me to get used to but then I wasn't a big comic reader when I picked up the trade paperback in 1997. The facial expressions are very animated and I love Raphael's sarcastic remarks!  Angel

Vol. 3 #1 seemed a sensible start to the volume, in the intention of hitting the ground running.

Right off the bat it was just exciting to see what Gary, Erik, and Frank were going to do with the Mirage canon that had been handed to them.

First impressions: A little light on the character stuff (I did like how it all begins on their 18th birthday) but nothing was in there telling me, "Oh, such-and-such Turtle isn't like that" to pull me out of the comic. Hated the lack of any attempt at duotones here, which was a creative decision by Erik Larsen and no one else.

And Volume 3 at large? I think the "general consensus" of the fandom is that people have warmed up a great deal more to it... after reading Volume 4. Not judging Volume 4, just saying what I've seen.

Thanks, Andrew! I remember reading a lot of your letters in the issues Wink

Image comics were around the time when The Next Mutation was airing also, and it seems like the two (TNM & Image run) are lumped together in the same 'bad' category. I've seen many more fans also warming up to the Image TMNT series (and TNM) over the years.

Haha! I really love Raph's attitude in the first issue - "I'll carve my name into your bare butt!" Love it!
