Anybody else seen Kung Fu Panda yet? I may be reading too much into the movie, but two instances really stood out to me, to the extent that I believe they're intentional allusions to the TMNT.

1) Master Oogway is portrayed as a very old turtle. One might even say that Oogway is the "granddaddy" of all anthropomorphic animal martial artists. In other words, without an old turtle master to pave the way for future generations, there wouldn't even be a kung fu panda.

2) When Po meets Master Shifu in the temple, he knocks something over and complains that he now has a "splinter." The way the line is delivered, it almost sounds as if he's calling him "splinter" by name. Given the resemblances between the two characters, I don't think it's strictly a coincidence.

I haven't seen it, but when I heard about it, I just knew the TMNT would be referenced somehow.  Very Happy/Big Grin

KFP definitely referenced the TMNT's!  The fact that they used a tortoise (or turtle) as aged master Oogway and then had Po say 'splinter' - when it wasn't really necessary for him to say anything AT ALL - is proof enough.  I whispered to my son about it, but he thought I was just crazy in the brain.  Uh, hellllloooo, why did they use a turtle and why have Po say 'splinter', unless....

Glad I'm not crazy in the brain!  :0)

I didn't catch the species of Master Shifu, though.  Thanks for clearing that up, BL.

Anyway, I thought it was a great film.  And after seeing WALL-E today with the whole family (and loving it!), it's going to be a tight race for best animation of 2008 at the Academy Awards next year!  Of course, there's still two more films yet to air - George Lucas' Clone Wars and that new Madagascar sequel.  A great year for animated flicks!

Sounds rather interesting. I'm prolly going to go see Kung Foo Panda when it comes to our theater - provided I'm not off chasing BSB around! Very Happy/Big Grin So, so long as it doesn't come that first week in August, it's all good! Lol. And...I hope I haven't missed it! I know WALL-E plays this weekend, I believe. No wait - that's next weekend. This weekend is Get Smart. Lol.

I didn't notice Po saying the line about getting a splinter. I guess I'll have to look at that when it comes out on DVD. But I did think that Master Shifu resembled Splinter with his beard. LOL.
