Hey everyone,

My 10th convention this year is a lot different than my normal cons, in fact this is a type of convention I didn't know if I would ever go to, and if I did... if I would enjoy myself.  Furry Cons, you hear a lot about them... sadly what you hear a lot of is from the people who don't like them so you don't really know what to except of them.  So when I found out I was going to one, I'll admit I was a bit out of the sorts not sure what to think of it.  Though I am willing to try any type of event and get my own view.   It's a good way to live, cause you never know what you're missing unless you are willing to give it a try.

This last weekend Miki needed me to help her get to two events, MidWest Fur Fest for Friday and Sunday, and Saturday we had to drive down to a Micky Dolenz (Monkee) concert.  So a lot of driving and little sleep.  This topic will only cover my two days at the Fur Fest (which was in Chicago).   Like normal my review will have photos to follow and this time there will at least be one video put up.  It's not in the TMNT memories section, since this event is not TMNT connected.

Miki as most of you know is an artist, so her goals were simple... get a table in Artist alley... my goal I thought was simple... find somewhere to get online to pester everyone on IRC.  Though that wasn't till the evening so I had hours to walk around and get to know the convention.  We got our badges and she went to the Artist Alley stuff, I met up with HotHead who was staffing the event for the video section.  Talked with him for a bit as we watched people in Fur suits hanging out in the lobby.  At this time I found free internet in the lobby.... ooohhh free internet Wink

After sitting there for a bit, he had to go set up for video and I wanted to walk around a bit.  I found myself checking to see if Miki got into artist alley, and she did.  Than I went and found a room called the Den.  The Den had food, drinks, computers and tables.  A nice hang out, while there I found out that 6pm there was going to be a Pasta dinner up in the Con Suite on the top floor... so I decided I'll like to try and make it to that.  I went in and talked with Miki a little, than walked around some more.

One of the things I really liked was that there was a charity there with dogs.  Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy was there with their dogs to raise money.   Rainbow Animal Assited Therapy is an oranization that works with trained, registered therapy dogs to help people, especially children, and those with special needs to improve their health, activities of daily living and quality of life.  I would spend a lot of time at their booth getting to meet the different dogs brought in, and talk with the people about the dogs.  It was really cool to learn about their work and how much good these dogs do.   They had a few items for sale and a donation jar.

I talked with a lot of different people at the con and found myself enjoying this event.  The people there were very friendly, the costume designs were great, and it was the first con where I was barely even touched let alone bumped into.  My arm was more safe there, than any of my other events I've done this year.  I saw a lot of hugging, cuddling, and petting going on around the crowd.  Though it was all good friends, and family friendly.

True they did have their adult sections, which Fur cons are known for.  But it is handled the same way as any anime, sifi or horror con handles it.  To where anything not family friendly is covered up with stickers and such so people can bring their children to this event.  And yes I did meet a lot of people who were into that sort of entertainment, but they were all very nice people and not pushing it on those around them.  Over all it's one of the friendliest and respectful fandoms I've seen at a con.

I  went up to the con suite where I got my pasta dinner and sat around talking with people.  We talked a lot of TMNT there.  People knew me from Totally Obsessed and so there was plenty to talk about.  I shared photos and stories.  I asked for people's thoughts on the new and the old TMNT.  It was great, we spent a lot of time talking up stairs.

I came down stairs and found a problem though... the lobby internet was down and there was no other free internet provided by the hotel....  in fact people who got rooms had to pay $10/day for internet.  So I tried for about an hour and a half to get online down in the lobby with no luck, so I went to the Den and asked them.  They did not have any wifi in the Den, but they did have one cord that could be plugged in.  Though I had to promise no web surfing or anything, that all I was doing was IRC.  I kept my promise as I signed onto the internet and just started to talk with Phoenix and Fae... it's going on 10pm, so much later than I wanted to be on... Artist alley was to close at 10pm (than I was to hit the road for what was suppose to be a 5 hour drive).

As I was finally starting to relax with over 24 hours of no sleep.... a guy came into the Den telling everyone they have to leave the fire alarm is going off.  So I went to pack up my computer, they tried to rush me... my line was "I already had one computer stolen from me this year, I'm not leaving without all my stuff on me."   So I packed up all of my stuff....  and got lead out with everyone else from the hotel to stand outside with 15 degree weather.... COLD!!!!!!

We were out there for could have been a half hour.  Pain was a strong thing for me at this time... pain... cold.... and tired.... I knew if I let the pain take me to the ground it could of got bad... cause of being over tired and super cold.... so I kept on my feet and talked with someone outside who knew me from myspace.

They than lead us in a hall and kept us there till the fire department allowed us back into the hotel.  I went straight to Artist Alley and stood near Miki's stuff till she got there, we started to pack up than.  I noticed a guy with masks behind us... so I went over and talked to him, the mouths on his masks worked so well it was really cool.  He knew me from TV, so I talked Turtles with him and a lady at his table.  His company was Lion of the Sun.  I hope that he can make it to a Michigan convention some time so I can show him some of my costume stuff home made and things I've bought.

Than Miki told me that we're going out to eat with Casey and a few others.... I was hoping just to hit the road so we could sleep when we got down to Cincinnati.   We went out to eat and didn't get to hit the road till about 1am..... got to our hotel in Cincinnati at 8am... left Cincinnati back to Chicago 2am.. and got back to Chicago at 7am on Sunday morning....

Sunday review coming soon.

I loooooved what they did for the Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy. That was awesome! I have never heard of a Con doing that before so that earns a lot of high respect there.

I remember you telling me about the fight to try and get online that night. I'm glad that they let you plug in at The Den.

Furry Con's before never really held an interest for me, I never really heard much about them. Now I am very interested in going to one. Sounds like it'd be a lot of fun. If you go to this again I might have to see about going with you!  Very Happy/Big Grin

Sunday we got to the convention center at 7am...  sign up for Artist Alley wasn't till 8:30am, so Miki and I found a place to sit where we'd hang out till it was about time.  At first the halls were quiet as no one was around, but soon the Furs started to come out.  Heh one of which was a dog that was carrying a GPS with him that could play music.... he ran at me and slide right in front of me... if I had my camera out I think I would of got a picture... it was during this time I realized that I should start taking pictures.

I helped Miki get her stuff into the Den as Artist Alley filled up and she didn't get a table at first.  She stayed there while hoping for a table to open up, sadly when checking the art show she learned that none of her art she put in there sold.  Sad/Down

I went to see about picking up a gift I ordered for Shadow Wolf, though the Dealer room was not open yet.  I went to head back to the Den and saw the Catman outside in the Hall way.  This is one of the people who was also on VH1's Totally Obsessed.  I knew he was going to be there, and wanted to meet him.  So I went up and introduced myself, someone else there pointed at me "You're the Turtle girl!" and next thing I knew Catman and I were posing for photos.  (Yes I do know the Catman's real name, but this is the name most people know him by from what I've seen online... and I'm not sure if it's true or not but I did read online that he did change his name to Catman... though I didn't talk to him at all about his name).  I sadly did not have my camera on me at this time, it was with Miki... so I left from that little meet up without any photos.  But it was nice to say I met him, just at the time was hoping to get to talk to him more.  He seems like a very interesting and nice person.  Happy/Smile

Miki picked up her stuff from Artist Alley, while picking that up she got the call that a table in Artist Alley has opened up for her, so she got her stuff together and moved in to get her table.

In the mean time I found myself staying at the table in the Den for a little bit, though now taking pictures of any Fur that came around me.  Which also got me talking with more people.  I found myself surrounded by other Turtle fans which was just to cool, we had in dept talks about so much Turtles... that I was just lost in the talks.   One guy came in with a Lion puppet, he bought it from a booth where I saw a Turtle puppet on friday, and it reminded me I wanted to go in and get that Turtle puppet.  So asking these people I just met to watch my stuff for a minute (yes trusted my laptop with someone I didn't even know)... I went into the dealer room and picked up a Christmas gift I ordered for Shadow Wolf, than went and got my Turtle puppet.  I went straight back to the table.

The guy with the Lion puppet was a lot of fun, as we had our puppets fighting each other... he kept threating Turtle soup.  So we got to goof off a bit, which I did enjoy.  An artist sitting at the table with us did a sketch of the Lion puppet for the guy, and gave it to him.  At this point I decided I was going to drop off my laptop and such in the car, I wanted to move around the con more and I didn't want to carry that heavy bag everywhere I went... I also did want to pick up my tripod since I saw there was a puppet show that day so I wanted to check that out too.  On my way to the car I stopped at the "Rainbow Animal Assisted Theapy" booth and bought two things to help donate to their cause.

At the car I got a little creative, as I put my pillow doll of Michaelangelo on my belt strap and than put a little Fast Forward Mikey doll on there as well.  I let my video camera hang around my neck and kept my new Turtle puppet in my hand... now going back into the con... covered even more in Turtles than normal.  It was great, I could carry dolls around with me, and it wasn't something people found weird or odd... since everyone else had stuff as well.   More people started to talk with me, random topics about Ninjara popped up... it just seemed to be more of a topic starter.

I walked through Artist alley and saw someone looking at Miki's art, I went up and said how good it looked with their Fur Suit and even asked for a picture of them with this shoulder Fox that Miki made.  Than I went on my way, I started talking to a few of the artist in there that like TMNT, and one artist came up to me from the other side of the room and talked to me.  Sadly because of how out of it I was, I didn't take people's contact info... knowing that my mind would just mix everyone up in my head... though I did give out the link for TMNT-L to a lot of people.  I went out and walked around again... this time I bumped into Catman in the dealer room and I had my camera on me, so I asked for a picture.  We posed for a picture and got to talk a little more than originally... but the dealer room is louder, more crowded, and I was loosing my voice so I had to cut the talk and move on my way.  I went out in the hall and saw the Fur guy walking away with the Fox around his shoulder!   Yay he bought her Fox!  So I asked for another picture of him with the Fox, than went on my way.... I was heading to the puppet show when I saw the dogs over at the Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy booth, so I stopped over there to pet the dogs and one of which took an interest in my Mikey doll, a nice lady there took a picture of the dogs with me.  (And had them emailed to me before I even got home!).

I got to the puppet show and watched it, there was some fun stuff to it.  Their 12 Days of Christmas was fun, the pixy stix fight was fun, the ferret song was fun.  I got the full show that I came in for on video... but I think I missed the first few minutes.

After the puppet show as the Closing panel, I got this all on video as well... as they told us how well they did this year, and how they're going to be the same weekend next year in the same location and next year is their 10th year.  But what got me the most was when they started to talk about "Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy" and how much money was brought in... giving the numbers from the table, and two different auctions it was almost $7,000... than they called up an artist who did a comic for the show and said all profits are for "Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy" giving them another $500 to bring them over $7,000... than the Chairman said they're going to double this so that the charity will be leaving the con with $15,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  So yes I gained a big respect for this convention!

(I will be putting that part of the closing panel on youtube)

After closing I met up with Miki, who had some art to do in the Den before we could leave.  So I went and tried to sleep in the car... she came and woke me up from the small nap I took out in the ice cold weather and we went to dinner with a new artist friend of her's.  After dinner we hit the road... heading home....

All in all I give Midwest Fur Fest two thumbs up and will return!   I would love to THANK everyone there for the great time, and if anyone from there is checking out this site, feel free to join and say hi!  Happy/Smile

I'll be posting pics sometime soon.
