Dragon Ball Evolution 2009

I went and saw Dragon Ball yesterday... here's my review...

1. Fans who love the series will have problems with the movie.
2. Movie goers who don't know anything about Dragon Ball may enjoy this movie.
3. The movie would of been better if it had different name and different names for the characters.
4. No Krillin, big down side for any Dragon Ball fan.
5. The writer only took some of the ideas from the original book and put them in the movie.

Light spoilers for those who know the series

6. Grandpa Gohan is still alive.
7. Goku is 18 years old (this is suppose to be Dragon Ball, not Dragon Ball Z)
8. Goku is going to High School
9. Goku is flirting with Chi Chi (In the series he doesn't really know what girls are right away so flirting isn't something he even thinks about... he doesn't even know what getting married means)
10. Goku is a school nerd (That was Gohan, not Goku... he's too carefree to be troubled by this!!)
11. Goku had a problem learning the ka mae ha mae wave (In the series Roshi warned him it was a hard move to learn, Goku turns around and blows up a car with it with no real training)

HEAVY SPOILERS!  Don't read unless you want to have the movie spoiled for ya

12. Grandpa Gohan is Killed by Piccolo (I thought it had more of an impact on Goku when we learn it was him who killed his Grandpa while in Monkey form)
13. Goku monkey form ends up having something to with being a servant to Piccolo (Interesting twist).

Over all it's not the worse movie of the year, but fans will not be happy with it.  They destroyed who Goku is from the series.  They made it their own, too much... they took too many steps towards putting Goku in this world.  In the series he's wild, there's dinos, and he doesn't know what a girl is.  So this Goku in the movie just is not the Goku I am a fan of, nor could I become a fan of this Goku...

It is the Smallville version of Dragon Ball.

Anyone else see it?  Thoughts?

You saved me an excess ticket. I'm a collector of the series, so I'm not even going to waste time on this tripe! I went ahead and saw your spoilers, and I'm glad I did! If I waited to see the movie, I would have walked out before it was over. I'm a big fan too, so I would have been totally disappointed.

Leave it to Hollywood to ruin classic stories with their own watered down versions!

Yeah I had to give it a try and see what they did.  I know I've been seeing the trailers a lot and really worried about it... one of the things that I was wrong about with the trailer was when they were mentioning something made by seven mystics... I'm glad I was wrong.  I thought they were saying the Dragon Balls were made by them, but they were talking about the containment unit that Roshi uses.

I don't need to see it again....

And it looks to be set up for a 2nd one.

My brother in law is going to be steamed! He went to see it the other night, right before Earl and I heard how fans on line were just ticked about the movie. Before that, we were curious about seeing it, but now, especially after seeing your spoilers, nope, not gonna go. Even as casually into DBZ as I am due to my brother in law, I don't care for what they did with the story.

Although, when I saw the scene in the trailer with Goku spontaneously spawning his Saiyan hair, my reaction was a big WTF? I also noted it seemed to look more like Gohan's hairstyle later in the series, when he's grown. The short cut. Didn't look anything at all like Goku's hair to me.

We're still waiting to hear his rant about it on the phone.
