Like I said previously, I'm an avid X-Men fan, and while his past was once a convulted mess, I knew quite a bit about the character of Wolverine and those that play a role in his life. Now, I'm not someone who has to have every single detail of a character's life transferred onto the big screen. I know that isn't possible in a movie that's only 2 hours or so long. However, there are some basic details that need to be clarified. First, Agent Zero isn't asian, he's German and he's a mutant, not just someone insanely good with a gun. Second, Deadpool was a mercenary first and foremost with no special abilities. Third, it's not been stated as of yet that Wolverine and Sabretooth (Victor Creed) are related, however, I can live with this. I could probably go on forever.
The opening sequence of the movie was superb and was about the only way to tell Wolverine's young years. Though I do miss the character of Rose, as she apparently becomes the basis of why he loves Jean so much in the comics. Why do they draw all redheads to look like Jean? Anyway, the opening was great and actually had me hooked right away. After he and Victor run away, the montage of different wars they were apart of was great.
One of the biggest creative license they took with a character from the X-Men films was that of Stryker. In the comics, there was a graphic novel called "God Loves, Man Kills". If you don't know it, pick it up. It's perhaps one of the best stories ever written and it did serve as one of the basis for the second X-Men film. Stryker, in the book, was a reverend for a church, and was a man who did loose his family to a mutant and was hunting mutants himself. He used religious methods as a way to further his political agenda against mutants. It's a great read and it gets to the true heart of what the X-Men comics are about. In the movies, however, Stryker has been changed to one of the people in charge of creating "Weapons", such as Weapon X. For those who don't know, Wolverine is basically "Weapon X". The program takes mutants and transforms them into stronger mutants and use them to fight enemies and such. Though at least Stryker still wants to get rid of mutants. *shrugs* But you know, overall, it still works and it's a change that doesn't bother me.
Now, I would like to jump over to the acting. Hugh Jackman is a multi-talented man. He can sing, dance, and act either as a comedian, a magician, or as a angry/angsty comic book character. This is the role that has given him this fame he has today, so, of course he did great in it. Though I still roll my eyes at his guttural screams. I think they are just hard to do in general. Next there's Liev Schrieber as Victor Creed. Man oh man, this guy knows how to have fun with his roles. The character of Creed was perhaps my favorite of all in this movie. Liev did an amazing job in bringing this character to life. I was hesitant with him as the choice at first since he is kind of a small guy for this character, but after watching him in the movie, they couldn't have asked for a better guy. For the role of Stryker, Danny Huston did a good job. This role originally was played by Brian Cox, and it doesn't get much better than that. So, Huston had big shoes to fill. Last acting role I'll speak about is that of Deadpool. Deadpool is perhaps my second or third favorite comic character in the books. When I saw Ryan Reynolds playing him in the movie, I cheered. Ryan has that sassy, sarcasm that fits into Deadpool's persona.
Speaking of Deadpool, it's hard for me to contain my animosity towards the movie version of this character. At first, Ryan Reynolds is playing Wade Wilson and does a great job. Then... oh.... how I hate this... and this is a major spoiler unless you've seen the toys... Wade Wilson becomes Deadpool by the program somehow instilling all the powers of captured mutants into him. They take powers from Wolverine, Cyclops, Wraith, and others...... AND... they sewed his mouth shut. They sewed the mouth shut of a character whose nickname is "Merc with a Mouth!" *breathes* It just really annoyed me to no end. Though, at the end, it looks like they have fixed that and that there will be a Deadpool movie. Better get it right. Mind you, the character of Deadpool is only suppose to get a healing factor that in turn is suppose to help the fact that he is terminally ill with cancer. It does help him, except for the fact his body is completely scarred from the cancer which is why he wears a full suit costume.
At least they did Gambit some justice, as long as the guy didn't speak too much.
