When I took a trip out of town outside of my area of west suburban Chicago, I nearly ran over a turtle.  I was heading back to my KOA site (Kamp of America) from the Starved Rock State Park, there was this turtle in the middle of the highway, and I came within inches of hitting it.  Thank God I missed it, but I can see where that turtle might not of made it.  The street color is black, and the turtle's dark body blended very well with the highway.  And if it was trying to go from side to side, it was about 60% of the way across when I had to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting it.  And if someone had ran over it, you can't blame the driver, the turtle blended very well with the street.  I only hope it made it across.  And this kind of reminds me of an iguana that ran across the road in that same area only two years ago.  We're not used to these kind of creatures in the State of Illinois, let alone crossing the street of a big highway.

If you want to visit my site it's" www.ninjaturtles25years.webs.com.  I haven't done any updates in the past several days because of a weekend trip, and the web provider Webs is experiencing technical difficulties.

Glad you didn't hit it, I'd have been depressed about that, too.

I have actually hit a turtle before and it is quite depressing!!! I was going down to Tennessee and there's a lot of hills... I mean steep hills that is hard to reach 60mph on. Well, I was coming down a hill at about 80mph, coasting mind you. And then WOOOSH!!! I snip a turtle... the poor thing then flies back and then begins it's roll down the hill behind me.
I was quite disturbed by that and freaked out for the rest of the trip. Sad/Down

Trouble with this one was it was on a black surface, and it was a dark turtle.  It blended very well with the highway.  I don't even know if it ever made it across, the speed limit was like 55 mph.  Strange thing I couldn't figure out is why was that turtle near the highway, and not near any river?  I mean there was the Illinois River a few miles south.

Happens often around here. Yesterday, I was driving home to my parents... I had to go over a turtle in order to miss hitting it with the tires. There definitely wasn't any water nearby at all though it's been raining a lot.
