When I took a trip out of town outside of my area of west suburban Chicago, I nearly ran over a turtle. I was heading back to my KOA site (Kamp of America) from the Starved Rock State Park, there was this turtle in the middle of the highway, and I came within inches of hitting it. Thank God I missed it, but I can see where that turtle might not of made it. The street color is black, and the turtle's dark body blended very well with the highway. And if it was trying to go from side to side, it was about 60% of the way across when I had to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting it. And if someone had ran over it, you can't blame the driver, the turtle blended very well with the street. I only hope it made it across. And this kind of reminds me of an iguana that ran across the road in that same area only two years ago. We're not used to these kind of creatures in the State of Illinois, let alone crossing the street of a big highway.
