I saw a bunch of people talking about cosplay on another thread here, so I figured, why not make one just for cosplay. What characters have you done before? Which ones would you like to do in the future? Since cosplay is really a more anime term, have you had costumes that were non-anime? Maybe we can even discuss types of tricks and tips for the cosplayer trying to create something really difficult for their costumes.

I have cosplayed a strictly anime character ONCE and there are no pictures of that because it was horrible.  *L*  I did cosplay someone from a manga though, so I guess that counts.  Generally I did Jrock though, I've been Mana from Malice Mizer three times.  (Which doesn't sound like much but I only go to one con a year.)  Unfortunately I seem to not have any pictures of my last Mana costume uploaded.   Sad/Down

Me as Bunny Mana and my friend Kitty as Yuki from Raphael/Rice.  (Both Jrockers.)

The only picture I currently have of me as April and that was a "test run" shot.   Sad/Down

I have a couple more but I'm a "found cosplayer" for the most part so yeah, I don't do anything elaborate unfortunately.  I should learn to sew one of these days... and drive...

That's way awesome you did April!

I have done SO many anime cosplays. Let's see if I can remember them all...

Ryoga from Ranma 1/2
Kyo from Fruits Basket
Ayame From Fruits Basket
Taikoubou from Soul Hunters (also made a Siboushang plushie that doubled as a purse)
Seto Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh
Asuka (sort of--altered costume) from Evangelion
Sasame from Pretear (Manga version)
Yaone from Saiyuki
Youko ("boy" outfit) from 12 Kingdoms
Queen Kei from 12 Kingdoms
Yuruichi from Bleach

Don't want to bombard anyone with pictures unless you badly want to see them. But this is my favorite picture of myself as Seto Kaiba and my friend Nie-Chan as Yugi. These costumes are pretty old. We made them for one convention and never expected to wear them again. That was about 3 years ago and we have had several other times where we've had to dig them out again. These costumes are thuroughly thrashed by now, I'm afriad. But they had a very good run.

At Anime Vegas, with all the Ninja Turtle voice actors there, I kinda wanted to do Karai for a costume. But I didn't have the time. Maybe next year if they're invited back again Happy/Smile

I SERIOUSLY need to learn to sew.  My dream costume is D from Petshop of Horrors but it's a very specific costume from the manga so I'll have to make it/have it made.  I'm well aware that my cosplay is crap compared to other people's but heck, it's all about having fun right?  As cute as the Bunny Mana costume was to people, cosplaying Mana is a pain in the BUTT!

Someday Count D...

OH!  I don't know HOW I didn't post this one!  It's my favorite so far and it WILL be done again.  Memory of Alessa from Silent Hill 3, the costume itself is covered in fake blood, food coloring, spray paint and dirt (yes dirt) and it took me about... fourty five minutes or so to get ready (not counting drying time) but it was worth it!  And I could sit down!  I thought for sure I'd have to stand and not touch anything but I could!

I got hit on more in that costume than I had in the past four years going to that con.   Shocked  And I was also asked some very WEIRD questions, such as what I was going to do with the underwear I wore while getting all bloody.   Shocked

Count D is actually quite easy to do. Just do your nails, wear make up, get a short, black or purple wig, and a chinese dress with long sleeves. Wear black or white dress pants under it. You can even buy one at a store if you don't want to or can't make one. I've seen a few people pull it off that way and people do know who you are. If you have some kind of wierd animal plushie or a fan to carry around with you, it adds to the costume as well.

There's an outfit he wears in the manga that I want to do, it's very specific.  I'd go as far as to give volume numbers but my friend has all of them right now.  But it's the only outfit he wears where you can VERY clearly see his pants.  Since it's manga there's no color but it looks black and white, and it's sleeveless.  It's one of the few times where D gets very angry, and the only time I believe where he comes close to killing someone.

Ooh, cosplay!

I've only done a little bit myself. Can't really afford to go to too many cons, and cosplaying hasn't really caught on at FallCon at all. I've seen a little bit done, but the costumes weren't really that great, unfortunately.

The best cosplaying I've done was at Novi Con 2001, where I went as Zoisite from Sailormoon, but did the manga version since another gal already did the anime version(and that year, she got her hubby to go as Kunzite/Malachite...and I think I have a pic of that around here somewhere, lol...let's just say he really fit the part!). I didn't make the costume myself, since I can't sew worth a darn, at least where clothing's concerned, and my mother's not a very good seamstress, so we had a neighbor lady do it. Didn't cost too terribly much, so I managed to afford it.

The parts I did obtain myself were the belt(a bit of elastic that I spray painted- yes, spray painted- green), the gloves(believe it or not, these were snitched from my prom dress garb from my junior prom. Still have the dress, figured the gloves could get more than one use out of 'em Razz), and the boots(just bought 'em myself, cheap things from Kmart of someplace, I forget where).

The cape Mom did, actually, but the gray parts, the jacket and pants, the neighbor lady did. I took a bunch of pics when I was out there staying with Don Ivey(well, she took 'em, since I'm obviously posing in them Razz) in her backyard. I chose two of the best ones that I liked to share with you guys.

Yes, I know the hair isn't the right color. Razz I've got long enough hair to do the style, but there's nooooo way I'm going to bleach it all blonde, not when it took me 15 years to grow it that long. Razz

That's my katana I'm holding, one I bought that year at one of the flea markets Don took me to. Did a bunch of goofball shots and various poses one afternoon for the heck of it, shot up nearly a whole roll of film, too.

If I could afford it more, and went to more cons, there's a lot more cosplay I'd like to do. I've wanted to do a Sailor Pluto, but I kinda shy at the idea of wearing a really short skirt for it.

Trying to recall if there were any other animes I wanted to cosplay to. Sailormoon's the one anime I've followed the most.

Non-anime, I have to say, I want to work on a suit of full Mandalorian armor and go as one of the two Fetts, but there's no way I can do that in a hurry. Earl's found recipes(lol, as it were) to make the costume, but they ain't cheap by a long shot, and it'll take a long time to do it. The worst of it will be the helmet part. There's two kinds of replicas one can get for costuming, and the best one is easily a grand, so we either have to save a looooong time for that, or we can go with the cheaper one(100-200, depending on where you get it) and fix the faceplate visor(it apparently comes with cheapy plastic that's not very good, but is apparently easily replaced).

Earl 'n I've talked about it(joking that he'd go as Jango 'cause he's taller, with me as a young Boba since I'm shorter Razz), but until we can afford it, it doesn't look like we'll be doing that anytime soon.

My Mikey costume, my number one cosplay costume... Happy/Smile  Of course, when it was made I didn't even know the word cosplay.

And there's our local Donatello dressed up like April O'Neil... who knew Donny could look so much like April?

The thing about cosplaying for me, is that I get a really good idea to cosplay someone and often get at least half the stuff I need together and then either the costume doesn't get made in time by whoever I asked to make it for me (I have no skills lol) or I chicken out on it XD

I couldn't find any pics right now, I'll post some if I find any.

My first cosplay ever was Videl from Dragon Ball Z XD My hair was already long and black and I just put it in pigtails, and wore a xtra large white shirt and black shorts, and already had the gloves she wore too. The only thing I had to do actually was make the Orange Star High patch she wears. I made Scott cosplay Gohan in his school outfit too! XD

Next I was GONNA cosplay Kikiyo from InuYasha, cuz it was my big fandom before Venture Bros (*blush* XD). I bought the really long black wig and the Japanese sandals she wears and even a Shikon jewel off ebay XD But my friend didn't make the outfit on time, plus I changed my mind and decided to cosplay Triana Orpheus from Venture Bros instead heh, since I fell deeeeeeply into that fandom XD

For Triana's cosplay I just had to buy a purple wig, cuz I already had the tights and skirt, and just wore my Venture Bros skull logo shirt. Though for that cosplay, it didn't last long. I wore it for like several hours one day and that was it. I didn't think I looked right, and was kinda embarassed when someone asked if I was Yumi from HI HI Puffy Ami Yumi lol Not that I mind that show, plus Venture Bros wasn't that popular then....but....ya know?

Then I cosplayed Dean Venture XD For that I just had to buy a sweatervest, eveything else I already had. That was slightly embarassing, but actually more hot then embarassing heh. Long pants and long sleeve dress shirt and sweatervest = very hot. o.o; lol SO I cosplayed that for about a day, and woulda cosplayed that one longer but it was rather uncomfortable lol

Next I hope to cosplay Mitsuki from Kappa Mikey! Very Happy/Big Grin I've got my blue wig, and the cloth I need to make the costume...I'm just hoping my friend will make it in time XD Here's hoping! And once I get it done (if it happens) I'll be sure to share pics! It's of Mitsuki's regualr outfit. If it turns out right, I'll prolly make her LilyMu costume for Katsucon! Very Happy/Big Grin

Crittles: I'd say--just go for it!
See if you can get your friend to teach you how and go visit and do it yourself.
Maybe have her do the trickier stuff, but if you helped work on it, it'd go faster and then it would also be a work of art of your own, too.

I say this because....
Some years ago, I was known as a "killer of sewing machines" and things using thread and needles.
My mom *howled* with laughter when I told her I was going to sew some things for the conventions.

But I've got someone experienced in cosplay helping me learn how to put stuff together.
She had to move recently, so we'll be getting back into working on stuff for San D Con again, soon.
She suggested before tackling costumes, start simple for the first project. Like a simple sleep-wear top and bottom.
So I did sew my own pair of shorts recently. Made them with 'happy pizza' fabric.
Next I'll sew a sleeping top to go with the shorts. It's Hawaiian-style turtle fabric.  Happy/Smile
(I'll be wearing them at the Con at night, of course!)
Then move into finishing up stuff for this year...maybe! Because at the rate I am going, I won't have anything done for this year, either!

Those in the San D Con-going group that have done a lot of cosplay over the years laugh that is the first rule of cosplay. There must be something you are finishing or adjusting at the last minute. So I think I will be joining them in good order this year.

And there are a lot of good websites out there for information. I learned how to make elf leggings from the famous AlleyCatScratch site for LotR type stuff. So that was my first home-made part of a costume.
I had bought the dress so I could use it for elf dressing up at LotR events, and use it for going to Ren Faires. I wore it to San D Con one year. Which is when the evil cosplay group said: "join us!! Make something!"

Whether I succeed or not, remains to be seen. I might be just packing the usual jeans and tshirts....
 LOL

Never really did get much into cosplay, though it does seem fun...

I know I went with Raph tied to my leg, then fed him fries the last time I went to the local con with TN.

I was She-Ra for Holloween when I was a kid! I still have the cape, even...and an old pic, which I don't think I'll post as my other three sibs are in it, too.

Was the DreadPirateMoron the last time I dressed up for All Hollows, too...

I've wanted to go as Ed from Cowboy Bebop, though, as I'm kinda built like her, can do the voice and with enough sugar and caffien, act exactly like her. *G* Would just need to chop the hair and dye it red...

Dread Pirate Moron!!!
Were there pics??!!!

As for Ed, that would perfect for you!
But you don't have to wreck your hair to do it. There are things called wigs, and I would bet that some of the cosplayers might have suggestions on the good sites to get those from....

Of course, if you really wanted to do that to your hair....go for it!
