*Taken from my journal*

So today's episode was Samurai Tourist... one would think I should be thrilled... I have been waiting for this episode sense last May when Stan Sakai mentioned that it was going to happen and I promptly had a squealing fit in his panel.... yet after watching this episode... I just feel well blah...

1) WHOEVER IS DIRECTING THIS SHOW KEEPS TELLING THE VOICE ACTORS TO PRONOUNCE GENNOSUKE'S NAME WRONG!!! And I am bluntly getting sick of it. And I am going to tell Mike when I see him at Katsucon. He is always asking if they are pronouncing things right and honestly Gen-chan had completely slipped my mind... but this will be mentioned to him because I swear in this episode alone Usagi pronounced his name three different ways...

2) I honestly was bluntly disapointed with the way they handled Gen's character for nearly the entire episode. He had some very funny, very in character moments, but dressing him up like Rocksteady... that actually pizza'ed me off. How dare they use a character created by Stan Sakai as some sort of lame in joke. I was furious.

3) Leonardo's attitude is finally getting to the boiling point with me. He was flat out rude to Usagi at the end and deserved to not only be called on that fact, but to be reprimanded yet he wasn't. Sensei Katsuichi (Usagi's teacher) NEVER would have stood for allowing Usagi to act like Leonardo is acting... I know... I know it's a kids show so they have to keep it light handed, but I am getting sick of 4Kids copping out. They keep going ON AND ON about Bushido yet I think half the people that write for the show don't have an actual concept for what it is... it takes me back to the episodes Rouge in the House when Leonardo kept going ON and ON about how Karai has honor.... how she follows the warrior's code of BUSHIDO..... ummm no.... Bushido is the Samurai code- The word Samurai means TO SERVE... the simply fact that Karai willingly was torn and turning her back on her Master meant she had no honor.... yet 4kids was liberally using an idea and concept that they didn't understand.

Turtles put me in a foul mood this week... and I think a lot of it honestly is I have been waiting MONTHS for this episode and after Real World has such high expectations for it.... and was sorely disappointed...

*sighs*

Not that there wasn't any good points... They had a very touching conversation between Leo and Usagi during a sparring match... in which Usagi used the example of his Master in relating to how Leonardo was feeling... a topic I myself had covered on one of the Turtle forums I am on....

There was also a rather stunning scene of Leonardo training at the beginning equally matched by a very vivid touching description by Mikey of how much pressure his older brother has and how he burdens a lot of things for the rest of them...

I just wish this episode over all could have been better.

Awww sis!! *hugs* I totally agree with you there! I mean it seems like the writers have lost the characterization of Leonardo and are only making him do things that THEY want...which isn't how u shoudl write...but it's hard not to do when you're writing for television.

Next week's look lame..*makes face* I just wish they would air my episode so i will quit whining.

I'm sorry you were disappointed in this episode..I know u have been waiting for it...I UNDERSTAND..there were a lot of times I was waiting for episodes...then they turned out to be crap!

I'm a bit hesitant to voice what I thought of today's cartoon episode.

I respect your views (looking at Kazari and WolfofMibu.)
I agree about the Gen pronounciations. The "suke" should get that u 'skipped over'. (But a character like Casey I could understand botching it up.)
And there's the long been the big debate about bushido, and I agree it's been overused by Hollywood and media in general without really understanding it. But when Karai chose to stay with the Shredder and fight the Turtles, she was following bushido, such as it would apply to a ninja clan, anyway.
There's that old classic thing of was it better to show one's true following of bushido to serve a good lord, or a bad lord? One of the more stringent applications of bushido was the code enforced by Kondo Isami of the Shinsengumi. That must have been a truly fearsome man. But ninja codes were not exactly samurai codes, anyway, so I am sometimes puzzled by why all the focus on bushido for the Foot Clan.

That said, when it comes down to it, it's a cartoon.
And I appreciate how much depth and maturity they are trying to bring to something on Saturday morning. I am more often amazed at how well they do, than over what they mess up.
(Although I reallllly would like to see Splinter's robe fixed so it's left over right, not right over left like he's dead.  Razz)
I liked today's episode a lot. I really enjoyed it.
I loved Usagi in shades. Laughed at the in-jokes to the old cartoon with Gen. Enjoyed the sparring sessions and the talks, and find the direction they have Leo going in very interesting. (It reminds me of some things I had kind of explored in "ancient" fan fics.) But I also keep hoping someday there would be a Usagi cartoon. And in the meantime, I enjoy that he gets to be on TMNT and be treated so much better than the Usagi in the old cartoon was handled.

*laughs* sorry just when I hear about Splinter's robe I think about the convention at Anime Vegas when Darren kept referring to Sensei's robe. "Don't touch my robe!"

No surprise here, I loved today's episode.

Yeah the mispronunciation of Gen's name is crap but I'm actually almost amused at the fact that they went from mispronouncing Jen-o-skay to mispronouncing Gen-o-soo-kay.  You can tell they're trying... so hopefully in the next season they'll combine their mistakes and get it right... or we'll have Jen-o-soo-kay and we can just set them on fire or something.

But I loved seeing Usagi, I loved Gen's um... "civilian clothes" (I seriously almost fell out of my chair laughing at that, then I had to explain it to my ex-TMNT fan boyfriend), and I really feel like Leo's attitude is going somewhere.  No I don't think the next episode will bring him happy hunky dory, heck he probably never will be that way (was he ever?) but give the man some peace!

I loved Usagi and Leo's sparring session, and it made me very happy to see Don acknowleding Leo's change.  I don't know why that matters to me, but he's the only one who hadn't up to that point.  And personally, I can't wait till next week's episode.  It looks a little... um... odd, but it should at least move things along some!   Very Happy/Big Grin

I, for one, enjoyed it. I personally think the both of you (Ookami, Kaz) have too high expectations. Remember, it is still a kid's Saturday morning cartoon despite how mature it already is. It's just not possible for them delve any deeper than they are. Forgive their oversights and mistakes, and move on. If you can help them out with corrections, that's good, but it's not worth being anal retentive over. Look at the big picture instead.

The episode was very enjoyable, and humorous (died laughing at the Rocksteady/Bebop reference. I should have seen that one coming), as well as dark and emotional. I believe for a few moments during their spar, Usagi was able to get through to Leonardo. It was unfortunately in vain when that assassain appeared to wreck everything, and after he was defeated by Leo. I was actually left a little stunned when he so fiercely spoke the line "You leave my friends and family alone!!!" Mainly because I have only heard him talk in such a way in my mind. Angsty or no, certain situations as that would entitle him to.

Yes, I am also frustrated with Leo's attitude (have been for most of the season), but I remain patient, and most of all, understanding. It truly tests my faith in him, but so far, I am still standing by his side. I know it will take time for him to heal. It's not going to happen overnight. He's not going to accept help if he doesn't want it, and right now, he doesn't want any help from anyone. Sometimes it's best if you leave a person alone to figure things out, and Leo needs to resolve these problems on his own. Perhaps this trek to Japan in the next episode will be the first step in helping him rediscover himself. One can only hope anyway.

LM, maybe I do have too much of high expectations but I also know that episodes are scripts..scripts from stories..and with stories you have to have characterizations. You can't just force something to happen because YOU want it to happen. You really need to know the character's depthness.  You can't just spurt out a lot of things about Bushido without knowing it yourself. To be a writer you need to research about what you are saying. I do agree with Wolf that Leo acted like a complete jerk to Usagi.

I also do know that I have been let down a lot by the new show. I see stuff that interest me and I do get my hopes up by a lot of things to only be let down from lack of scenes. That's why I'm getting to the point to where I don't really care anymore.

Now I do not have a problem at all with Gen as Rocksteady. I laughed at him, but I do know that Gen is part of another comic so to speak so you have to AGAIN be true to his character and not just make things happen because you want them to happen. The other old toon references DO Make sense with April with Channel 6 and the Utrom Krang that could work but with this no.

The thing with Gen as Rocksteady to me is that it may not have fit his character from the comic, but it fits his character from the cartoon.  I'm not saying that's right or wrong, that they should or shouldn't have done that, I'm just throwing that out there.

Why are you hesitate!! You have awesome opinions!!  Love

I completely agree about Karai and her honor and staying with the Shredder.... thats why I cited the Rouge in the House episode, because it was pre Karai leaving Saki and also were Leo most blantly misued the word Bushido in my opinion... See to me the issue is the fact they use the word Bushido... honestly they could just use the word honor and completely cover there butts because there are SO many different opinions on just what honor is... Bushido has too clear cut of a defination and they box themselves in.

Do I have to complain..... no... I mean your completely right it is just a cartoon and they do, do remarkable things on it for a childrens show... Its just probably the only aspect of this entire show that bothers me... because sometimes they use bushido so cleary and perfectly and other times its very muddled and confused. I blame this on different writers. And once again honestly its not a huge deal. Its just my one little nit picky thing!! *laughs*

I don't think they really focus on Bushido in terms of the Foot with the exception of Splinter continuously throwing into Saki's face that he has no honor. They focus on it more with the Turtles and most honestly the most with Leo... I think they use Bushido as a platform with which to define his character, he truely is the bridge between Samurai and Ninja, he uses "Ninja Tricks" yet he follows the code of the Samurai, which I reason is why Splinter often calls his sons warriors versus Ninja- Ninja honor code is very different from Samurai and Ninja are often looked down upon by Samurai as Gen personifiies very clearly... Razz Yet these "kame ninja" are respected because they aren't excatly ninja.... I would be very interested to know more about Yoshi... I think being a Guardian and serving his Masters he became sort of a hybrid between Ninja and Samurai which has been passed down to the rest of his family.

Just have to mention I LOVE the fact you mentioned Kondo! I am SUCH a Shinsegumi nut as you can probably tell from my screenname and it made me squee with glee to see him brought up!!

It may seem as if my expectations are high... but that is mostly because of how much I do love and respect the show... If I didn't think so much of it... I honestly wouldn;t care.... and like I stated above... this isn't going to tarnish my veiw of Ninja Turtles... this is simply my own personal demon that I felt like sharing and a topic that has been irking me sense season 2...

As for not standing by Leo?? I have never questioned my devotion to his character. Prehaps I am just looking at it from a different view then others... Prehaps I have just watched too many Samurai movies with the harsh, yet caring sensei....

*laughs*

Anyway that is enough rambling from me!

*smiles*

Yes true they are the same species..but still Rocksteady and Gen are 2 different personas..

April in new toon with Channel 6..it made sense because she was trying ot find a way to help out the guys and I could possibly see that.

Krang as utrom..it was like one line and we dont need anything else about that utrom so yes.

Gen and Rocksteady are different. If you read the graphic novels and I would ask Wolf on this since she knows more about Usagi and Gen that I do..Gen went out of character to do that.

Nah we all have our various ways of standing by our favorite characters.  While Mystic has been able to stand by Leo with love and affection this entire time, I've been wanting to kick him in the butt and tell him to work this out.  It doesn't mean I love him any less, I'm just the kind of person who can only go so long before they start to get angry that someone they love is tearing themselves apart.

Kaz, you have to remember this is only a half hour long show. The writers can't possibly cram everything they want into it. That's why some episodes feel rushed, or don't have enough scenes, research, explanations, etc. You have to compromise somewhere.

Kazari, was that last comment in reference to my post?  'Cause I wasn't saying anything about them being the same species, I was just saying that it seemed in character for Gen from the cartoon.  I honestly have no idea how different they've made him in the cartoon unfortunately, but from the way he acted throughout the episode, it didn't seem OOC to me at all.

Though even without reading the graphic novels I can be pretty positive that yes, it's very OOC for him as far as that's concerned.

Aaaaand if you weren't talking to me I'll just go back to my coffee and feel dumb.

Well again that goes to writing..if you are going to say something you HAVE to know what the heck you're talking about.  Bushido is pretty complex so you can't just toss that around and not really know what you're getting at."

If you are not explaining things...then your stories won't make sense and thats when you have out of character mishaps.

Again with the scenes..i know they edit them for time and so forth. I am aware of that. I was just saying that a lot of times the scenes in the comics that were Don parts were now taken away for Leo and I just like to rant about that for fun.
