Mess with the best, get bapped like the rest!

« on: November 07, 2011, 10:09:03 PM »

As some of you might know, I've been slightly obsessive over a Saturday morning kids' show from the 1970s since, well, it aired in 1976.  The online community has grown for it, and one of my friends from that group has prepared a fantastic website. She's gotten information from some amazing sources (heh, I've contributed stuff too, so there are some not-so-amazing sources there as well *G*) and she has worked very very hard on it.

Amazon is selling a book on this show, using information that they've obtained from online sources, Wikipedia and other websites...including her website. And they're charging $49 for it!!  As much as I would love to have a book on the show, $49 for a book put together from other people's hard work?  I don't think so.

Not sure which ticks me off more - her hard work practically being stolen, or that they're charging so much and trying to take advantage of the fans.

Ah, well, you don't typically pay your sources when writing something. You had darn well better cite them, though. Did your friend get credit for her work?

$49 does sound pretty steep for a book, though, especially if it doesn't include any original research (i.e., anything you can't find on these websites). Maybe one person should buy this book, and just post the text of it online. Would serve these publishers right!  LOL

No one knows exactly what's in the book, so it's uncertain if credit is given or not.  The book is currently "unavailable", so that kills buying it right now too.  However, that does sound like a good idea...or save the hassle of posting the text online and just say "If you want to know what's in the book, go to these websites:"    LOL

I just can't believe charging that much money for something you can find for free online.

That does sound a bit sketchy to me, Raph. I'm surprised the publishers are even charging for the content.

Legally, I suspect they can't charge for it...they don't have the legal rights.

Out of curiosity, how do you know what this book's sources are?

From the Amazon.com description:

"Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online."

I do realize that's iffy as to whether or not my friend's website is one of the 'other free sources' or not.  Considering the book is 112 pages, I would think it'd have to include some of stuff from her website because there isn't an awful lot about this show online otherwise.

At least they were decent enough to warn you up front?

Yes, there is that. To be honest, if they were charging less, I would consider buying it.  But $49??  That's ridiculous for a book that just over 100 pages, and is made up of online/free material.

Warning or not, it really comes across as "We know some fans will pay anything so let's see what we can get away with charging".
