I just don't understand how people can be so despicable. A couple of days ago I received a phone call from some obviously phony company asking for donations for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. All I could say was, "How can you live with yourself?!" and hung up the phone. Folks... the Red Cross, Salvation Army and etc. will NOT call you for help. You need to call them yourself or make an online donation. I weep for the human race when I see such blatant examples of taking advantage on the misfortune of others.

I guess this hit me pretty personally because I live in Florida, only about 2-3 hours away from where Hurricane Charley hit last year. And Hurricane Katrina could have easily turned and hit my area directly. But Katrina decided to keep heading west once it made it into the Gulf of Mexico, gain an unexpected (at least to me) amount of strength, and proceeded to cause an unprecented natural disaster.

My best wishes and the hopes of a speedy recovery goes out to all the areas affected.

It's very sad...these kinds of disasters bring out the best in people, but it also brings out the worst...there were a lot of scams that happened after 9/11, for instance...and for disasters before that, as well. Pretty sick..

That's really awful, Fugitoid.  It's why I'm always uncertain about sending money to any online links that supposedly say they're Red Cross or Salvation Army.  I've often been making donations through purchases of items.  Such as when Mom and I were in Old Town this past Sunday.  We stopped into a store called Del Sol, or merchandise that changes color in the sun, and my purchase made an automatic donation to Red Cross!  Also, with my paychecks, there's a deduction toward disaster relief.  I signed up for this cause a month or two ago and I'm pretty sure it's going toward Hurricane Katrina.  If so, that makes me feel good.

Yeah... I just went to the ACTUAL red cross web site itself to make my donation.  Can't go wrong there!
