Man, what an awesome episode! I loved every moment of it. I was deeply saddened though when Teng Shen died, because a part of me kinda hoped that perhaps in the 4Kids universe they spared her. Though I guess that's just not the case.

Just grabbed my journal review and re-posted it here
This episode was built perfectly from the beginning with Mikey DYING without his TV and Raphael getting in trouble for threatening to hurt him. Mike's line about Tokyo needed to be rebuilt because of a Godzilla attack (I don't know if I have laughed so hard at the beginning of an episode as I did at this one.) Then actually going into the Yoshi story, there was so much I could see drawn from old Martial Arts films, it was just a pleasure to watch and see all the teeny in-jokes they were slipping in along with story. I was happy they added so many elements from the actual comics, along with new plot line for the character. I was kind of disappointed when they first made Saki an Utrom because I know how much he ties into Yoshi's past, so the way they wove the two universes together I was actually really impressed with.
Little Splinter was possible the cutest thing on the show sense they showed the guys as babies the 1st season. And I really enjoyed his introduction and how he was Teng Shen's pet instead of Yoshi's at first. I felt it added to the tragic nature of Splinter past and also made his bond with Yoshi more believable and strong.
The ending with the four Shredder look a-likes and the Ancient One threw me... I have no clue where 4Kids is headed with this one....
The preview was also extremely funny.... silly Donnie sneezing on the Dinosaurs.

I really enjoyed this episode. Raph's expression went Splinter yelled to him was priceless, almost good enough for a screen shot.
I also liked the fact that they didn't use a sepia-tone color for the storytelling, as if it were a flashback. It's a nice touch for a short amount of time, but since the episode was mainly focused in the past, it was better to keep the colors normal. I also think it's the first time we saw Splinter with grey fur before the mutation. There was a speculation at another forum that maybe he had brown fur after seeing flashbacks and then it changed to grey when he got older. But, no, he was a grey (and cute!) rat from the start!
The story behind Yoshi having a brother (by choice) is quite interesting, almost as if taken away from Oroku Saki having a brother, which he did in Mirage. What was his name? Matsuki? I'm spelling that wrong, I know I am. I kept calling him Moe because he looked like a Japanese version Moe Howard from The Three Stooges. His hair looked like it especially! And I wondered why they gave Yoshi a horrible yellow jumpsuit during the battle scenes. I had visions of Uma Thurman in "Kill Bill." Tokka cleared it up over at Mikey's Forum that the yellow jumpsuit was inspired by Bruce Lee who wore a similar outfit. I thought, okay, that's different then because "Kill Bill" didn't exist in the 60's! I was about to go yell at the writers, too.
The death scene of Tang Shen had me a little upset. Not just with her dying (which really was sad!) but, the change with Shredder as an Utrom. He couldn't possibly do it, though, the story needed some kind of love triangle, and Yoshi needed some kind of rival to battle with. That's probably why they added in Ma...Matsuk...Moe! I felt sorry for Yoshi when he came over to see her. Shen was gorgeous, though, her eyes looked a little too Americanized and should have been more slanted, but she was indeed a vision of beauty. Such a shame she and Yoshi didn't get to have a future together.
I agree with you, Blue. The ending scene made me go, "What?!" The Ancient One is corrupted? What are they doing? There's something terrible in the wind, and it isn't just him passing gas! It looks bad, but I have to see what happens! Next week's episode looks like something I'm sure to enjoy. There was a Simpsons episode where Homer sneezed on a dinosaur and it caused a huge change in the future. Too hilarious with Don. I can't wait!

I don't think The Ancient One is corrupt, but those weird Shredder shadow things were plenty nasty looking.

oh yes, the opening was great! Don making a mistake and blowing out the power, hmm....and he's still limping it looks like? <insert doom music here> And there was that wonderful Raph grin, always so amazingly charming. You could see the attempt at projecting a halo.... And Mikey really is a Drama King.
I thought this was an interesting way to make a back story work in a TMNT-verse where Shredder's an Utrom and add some interesting tie-ins with other characters. As for the Ancient One, he was very much against the brothers joining the Guardians, but he never clearly said why. I don't think it's just me thinking his comments about "not ready yet" were the key reason. He said he had a different thought in mind for Yoshi's destiny. So I am guessing this all ties into the teaser at the end of the episode. The Ancient One clearly knew who the Guardians were, but for some reason, doesn't seem to be working with them? hm....fun stuff to ponder for the future.
If I have to make a complaint, it's that I am so tired of seeing the kimono's drawn right over left. <sigh> Okay, there, to finish, I agree that Splinter was very cute. Shen rubbing his belly was cute, too. Wouldn't do that to him now, though. heheh

The kimonos never really bothered me all that much, though there are some other inconsistancies here and there I could do without. Someone brought up the fact that the Ancient One never once broke wind in this entire story, nor did he in his little cameo from "Scion of Shredder". Though I guess the whole idea of that was he was trying to get Leonardo to cut loose (pardon the pun).

Meira thinks that those three or four characters at the end are-- what did she call them?-- the four corner spirits or something-- Dragon, phoenix, white tiger, and dark warrior! I do NOT believe that the Ancient One is corrupted or evil or anything! This is just their way of getting ready to end the season. I still think there is some mystic battle-rematch in the works between the guys and those Foot Mystics-- after all, Karai still possesses the heart of Tengu!

I think the farting durning the Ancient One episode was more to throw Leo off the track about his true identity then an actual problem the character had, I mean notice after Leo finally realized who he was he didn't fart any more either....

I still think there is some mystic battle-rematch in the works between the guys and those Foot Mystics-- after all, Karai still possesses the heart of Tengu! Good point! This episode confirmed to me that the Ancient One is Chinese, and he's clearly into the mysticism side of things. Taoism and Feng Shui? Toss in a few other things, too? Hmmm. As for the Ancient One not passing wind in this episode, it's probably how he changes himself depending on time and place and student he's dealing with. His goal was to irk Leonardo in that encounter, which I guess was at the point of the ultimate of "cutting loose"? (Funny Jephael!) And maybe he's just gotten cruder as the years go by. After all, the loss of Tang Shen must have been hard for him. And then Yoshi and Moe (love that!) going their own way. So what would the Ancient One be like if he was training Raph, Don, or Mike? The kimono really bother me because living people don't wear them right over left in Japan. It's like sticking your chopsticks in your rice bowl. There are so many basic cultural resources out there in travel books, on the internet...if someone is going to do a story or art based on another culture, the least that can be done out of respect is to go learn the common basics. As I was taught in college, always do the research. If I was going to write a fan fic where the TMNT visited someone in Hungaria, for example, even for a fan fic, I certainly would be going to the library and surfing the net for info. And if I also happened to know someone from there, I'd be sure to chat with them about it, too. The effort is worth it, and prevents you from making clear errors and faux pas. In Splinter's case, I keep seeing it as "well, he's dead in the Mirage comics." *Thus speaks the Nardo--and wonders if this qualifies as a Classic Soap Box Speech? I'm sure a certain Phael will say so!* And interesting point about how cultural characters are drawn....I work for a company where diversity and cultural sensitivity is important. For hand drawn art there is always a fine line on making someone look like the culture they are from, and yet avoiding stereotypes that could be considered insulting. I'm sure they face this issue in the cartoon industry in the US. (And now, for a certain Phael, I have introduced a pun of sorts to prove I am not taking this too seriously. Happy? )

It should be known I complain profusely about far lesser issues. If you want I can bring up to Mike Sinterniklaas as that is usually where I bring my complaints and then he passes them on for me. He too is interested in Asian culture and tries his best to make certain words are pronounced right and ideas are expressed correctly. A lot of times things are just being done incorrectly on the show because no one working on the staff knows it is. They like (at least from what I have encountered) when people point out small flubs to them, because a lot of times its just stuff they have missed.

This was a very interesting episoide. I've been waiting for this one since November when some of the artist mentioned it to me. So I'm excited to see it. I was happy to see the love triangle and the death of Shen, even if it wasn't done the same way as the comic. It gave that depth to Splinter's past even stronger. And made it clear to why Hamato stood out to the Shredder. Moe (Which is a GREAT nick for him Brin ) was a character that you could tell was going to betray them, though at first with the ads calling them brothers I was confused. I was glad when Yoshi called him 'Friend' I'm kind of intrested in Moe's side of the story a bit though, we saw his jealously coming on esp with Hamato passing him up some much. Though to go so far as killing people he cared about, I'm sure that there had to be some kind of encouragement from the other side. I'm wondering if the Foot saw this anger in him, and was slowly working at getting him to see all of these things that angered him so much so that he would join them and betray his choosen family. With AO (Ancient One), it really caught me off guard at the end when I saw him plead for the Turtles. Though it hit me about earlier that he didn't want them to become Guardians. It really makes me wonder where his loyaties are. It's clear that he cares for his family, which is a good reason he'd go on teaching Leonardo since he sort of came from that family. Though there's a lot he's not telling. I know it can't be a lead up to how they get to the future, because there was suppose to be a season between "Fast Forward" and now. So it would not make sense for it to lead into that. I hope this stuff is addressed soon though, because I'm curious.

What an incredibly good show this has become. 100 episodes and still going strong. Seriously, what other current show is as good? So much continuity, so many more possibilities..this show could go on for years and years more. Sadly, I still know people who won't give it a chance because they think it's like the old show.
Anyway, as always this episode was great. I think it's the biggest spotlight Yoshi's gotten in any medium. Loved the homage to Bruce Lee and the Tang Shen appearance. It was good to see Mr. Mortu again after so long ( I think he appeared last in "Exodus"?) I have a few theories of who the guys at the end could be: 1. The Shredder clones from "Return to New York" 2. The Shredder's higher-ups (whose armor we saw in the Battle Nexus episodes) 3. Shedder's <other> adopted kids
Apparently Yoshi named Splinter in this universe. I wonder if Splinter remembered experiencing all that or if he was just as intrigued with the story as us. He was a grey rat in this episode. I wonder why he was brown in "Tales of Leo"? Probably just a minor inconsistency.
I'm trying to think of something I didn't like about this episode. Maybe the fact that the Turtles had a widescreen tv. How in the hell do they get all this expensive equipment so easily? I guess hanging out at the junkyard pays off...
