Sabacooza, don't worry, you haven't riled anyone up...you've initiated a discussion. It's cool.
Now that folks seem to be over the "OHMYGODLEOISGOINGTODIEHOWCANTHEYDOTHISTOHIMANDTOME?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" phase, we can move onto speculating what it means, why it happens, how he gets out of it, if it happens... So many possibilities.
okay, so, where's
your possibilities?
*hands you a potato chip for your thoughts, then sits down with a cup of green tea and wishes for oreos*
well...if the point of the story is remorse for killing someone who shouldn't have been killed, even by unintended accident....
...and it's kinda suicidal even in a possibly accidental way (very disturbingly nasty way). And I do see that there's a point to Leo being impaled by his own sword, because the fall itself would have been enough. The sword is a bit over the top, so it's clearly symbolic. Because he killed with the sword, and all that it means to one like him.
I also think, as pointed out, that this a possible "what if" story that's the classic kind of tale about "what if you weren't here...." and I agree it might be something Splinter sets up in some way mentally, or Leo mentally does it to himself. Then in that classic kind of story gets to be a witnessing ghost.
And of course, the way out would be the ability to find forgiveness of some sort through that process of seeing other viewpoints, or bigger picture, or just working through the grief and agony to find what it takes to live on. To seek a redemption or atonement.
So there, that's my guess, be it right or wrong when the comics come out. Doesn't matter. This is Jim's story....
And despite the shock of the pages we saw, I am curious to see where this goes. I was actually impressed by what I read in the interview with Jim, so I have hopes it will turn out to be a good story. I hope!
And I have my other reasons.
Anyone that got to read any of my long-ago fan fics like Dark Journeys, Storm, and the unfinished Storm 2...know that some of this theme ran through what I wrote. I look forward to seeing what Jim does with it.
